Water Pump Failure? Electrical Gremlins?

2014 335i sedan. First BMW and just bought 4 months ago. No warranty:

The car threw a coolant temp alert that quickly went to over temp warning and limp mode. I let the car cool down and was able to get it home (about 20 miles) no problem. Driving yesterday and it gave me the coolant warning again a couple of times but no limp mode. Got it home and hooked up the scanner (Foxwell NT510). No codes related to the water pump.

I monitored Engine Coolant Temp and it did spike up over 240 degrees while parked, revving around 2500 and threw the warning again. Today, I warmed it up and it never went over about 228 while idling with a light load (2500rpm). I shut off the engine but ran the water pump (heater on high, fan on low). I could hear that pump running and it ran fine for a while. Then it started making a really loud, high-pithed noise. I took the below video with engine off and water pump running. It's loud!

Other info: I just replaced the Intelligent Battery Sensor with a Hella unit. I have been getting strange codes and alerts (IBS, suspension fault, low tire pressure, windshield wipers coming on and can't turn off, etc.). These have me thinking battery or alternator not supplying enough power and creating havoc. Battery is dated 6/18. Shows 12.2v when off and around 13.6v with car running. Initially thought the overheating was due to the pump not getting enough power but this noise has me thinking the pump is intermittently failing in addition to an electrical issue.

Anyone with water pump replacement experience have thoughts? Thanks!

But, if you look at RealOEM, the part number for the water pump does not match up to the Pierberg water pump part number for those cars with the M Sport package:

https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=17_0676

What is odd, however, is that RealOEM labels that water pump as an "auxiliary water pump" for the M Sports package, however, I have never seen more than 1 water pump on the M Sports package vehicles....

Nope, the parts are the same. M-sport pkg just has an aux radiator and plumbing (aka Hot Climate Pkg).

Back out of that section and search under engine rather than radiator.

I wouldn't be too sure. It appears the non M Sport package cars will use the following water pump:

11518635090
Coolant pump, electric

... which FCP Euro has the Pierburg option for.

However, M Sport package cars use the following water pump:

11517583965
Auxiliary water pump

... which is surprisingly less expensive than the non M Sport package water pump.

I think there are 2 water pumps, primary and aux (M-sport)

So I asked the shop foreman at my preferred dealership this exact question. The dealership hosts a lot of the BMW CCA DIY events for the chapter.

His answer was that the car should only have 1 water pump despite RealOEM calling one of the water pumps as "auxiliary". I think the RealOEM naming convention may be a bit confusing...

https://www.getbmwparts.com/v-2014-b...em--water-pump

If you look at the parts diagram from getBMWparts, it seems to indicate that the car either has the (one) water pump for the M Sport package or it has it for the non-M Sport package.

This would be consistent with the answer the shop foreman provided.

Even they call it an aux water pump (For my vehicle).

"Auxiliary Pump 2014-16, W/M PACKAGE".

I'm going to be under my car sometime within the next week. I'll look for it.

And another thing, the connections on the AUX WP are too small to push coolant for the engine itself AND it appears small enough to be suspended rather than bolted to a bracket.

90 percent certain it's a second WP.

That may be correct. I have not seen it yet in the engine bay but I haven't looked for a second coolant pump.

Then there's also this documentation:

Any luck finding both water pumps?

I forgot that I was supposed to look and the shop was backed up so I picked up the car later in the day.
