Pictures like yours are very rare. Thanks for sharing. What's the diagnosis?

When the car was in for a leaking diff that resulted in it being re-packed, I asked the lead mechanic to also listen to what I felt was unusual noisy high pressure fuel injectors. Upon investigating it was initially found that the rattling sound came from the timing chain, tensioner and guides. Oil pump and chain is also part of that replacement. After further analysis, was it also found that there was play in the valvetrain/valvetronic which was outside of acceptable tolerance. At one point was an engine replacement being discussed but the ongoing work was found to be financially favorable. Vehicle has 50K miles on it.

Curious and have questions.

I am wondering if something could have contributed to the issues or it was just bad parts. I myself don't want this to happen to my car.

Questions:
*Did you follow the initial 1200 miles break in process?
*Do you use auto start stop?
*Do you have rwd or awd?
*How often do you change oil?
*Do you like to drive fast and rev high?

Thanks!

Purchased the car used at 43500 miles so don't have the answers to all your questions but it is RWD and all services are done as per BMW service schedule. Aren't these cars supposed to be able to handle high speed and rpms considering how many of them are rolling on the German autobahn?!

My understanding is that these cars still need proper break in for the initial 1200 miles. I wonder the original owner followed the process or simply floor it since the first day of ownership....

Anyway, hope the newly fixed engine will last you many years!

Thanks OP for posting! It is rare to read about non-US cars encountering N20/N26 timing chain issue, but it sounds like yours fell victim to that issue.

So does Sweden also have extended warranties available? How much do they cost, and what kind of coverage is available?

Extended warranty on used cars that are sold privately can be purchased from 3rd party insurers for around USD 150 with six months validity and gives a cover equivalent to a new car.

With the engine apart like that, were you able to inspect the intake valves for carbon build-up?? Wondering what they might look like after 50,000 mile on this engine.

Are the intake valves in the lower tray(2nd row from the left) of the photo in post#1? If so the back of the intake valves look pretty clean.

Deductible of USD 110 for the diff leak and another USD 110 for the timing chain and valvetrain issue.

That's insane, I'm glad you opted for the extended warranty!

Do you mind if I ask how long your car was at the dealer being worked on? Have you received your car back yet?

My engine is being replaced by BMW as we speak, total for the job was around $22k, so just a little bit more than it was that massive job done on your car.
