What RPM do you shift at?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
For all the 6MT F30 owners, what RPMs do you shift at?

Since the first several gears are so "tall", I'm finding gear 5 to be obsolete when accelerating from 0 to 50 mph.

My casual shifting pattern:

1st to 2nd: 3200 RPM
2nd to 3rd: 3000 RPM
3rd to 4th: 2500 RPM
4th to 6th: 3000 RPM

My casual shifting pattern:

1st to 2nd: 3200 RPM
2nd to 3rd: 3000 RPM
3rd to 4th: 2500 RPM
4th to 6th: 3000 RPM
The 6MT is not geared the same between the 328i and 335i.
The 328i MT has a "short"/high number final drive-3.91, and 5th and 6th are over drive gears.

In the 335i, 1 through 5 are drive gears, and 6th is an over drive.
Final drive ratio is "taller"/lower number-3.23 in the 335i MT.

That quite short final drive in the 328i is what gives the 328i MT very good 0-60 acceleration. With 5th and 6th being over drive gears, there has to be a pretty good drop between 4th and 5th, more so from 4th to 6th..
I can see why you don't really need 5th. By the time you accelerated between 1 through 4, you're probably looking for best over drive as you're at speed by then.
Give how tall 6th is, I wouldn't use it until around 55-60mph.
When you go to 6th at 50mph, what rpm is the engine at?

Just curious, how fast is the car moving at the top of 2nd, at red line?

What speed is the 335i 6MT doing at the end of 4th? My E90 330d would be doing about 120mph.
It was geared for 170mph ish and does about 4500rpm in 6th at 155mph.

At around 50 mph in 6th gear, the engine RPM is around 1300.

The car has so much low end torque, this is not a problem for casual driving.

With such a good engine, BMW could have done okay with just 5 gears.

I guess the 6th is useful when I'm hitting 150 mph going to get my groceries.

My 335i 6MT is still on the boat to the US but IIRC, it was turning about 4500rpm at 200kph (~125 mph).

Heard it before, never knew what it meant
Typically older gearboxes would have a direct drive through them for top gear, a 1:1 ratio. Lower gears would obviously be reduction gear ratios, more revolutions in, than out. Overdrive ratios are the opposite, more revolutions out, than on the input shaft.

Years back with the 1:1 top gear ratio, often the gearbox had an option to have an overdrive unit fitted on the rear of the box, to give a higher 'fifth' output ratio. (something like a 1:1.1 ratio). Laycock was one common overdrive unit used in the UK, and you had a switch, often in the top of the gear knob, to switch the overdrive ratio into gear.

I had an overdive unit on my Triumph Dolomite Sprint, (1976) gave 'half a gear' between 3rd and 4th, and an overdrive on 4th gear. Incidentally it was a clutchless operation.

Now we often have, as said, two overdrive ratios in a standard 6-speed gearbox.

With 5th and 6th being over drive, 150mph just brings the rpm way down for a relaxed 150mph experience.

Yesterday I hit 110kmh(68.365444 mph, this is a tech thread so I want to look like Einstein too ) in second gear...

7000 in 4th gear is about > 200/210kmh(?)

I never look at the speedometre when I want to go fast. I watch the road ahead(and my '6' for interceptors/cops whatever)

Cheers
Robin
