What is the difference when it comes to
Those steering wheel controls? I thought those already worked on the original Carplay MMI?

Too bad the original did not drop in price

How is the sound quality through the AUX input, and are there any issues with the factory microphone (for phone calls and Siri)? Also, have you tested out any videos via USB flash drive?

Does the factory rear camera automatically pop up on iDrive and then switch back to CarPlay?

Steering wheel controls work to move the "cursor" around but don't map directly to skipping songs like they do via iDrive. Its a bit annoying but I basically need to switch apps in order to change the music if I'm not in the music app. This applies to both carplay and android auto.

Sound quality is okay tbh. It sounds slightly underwater to me compared to bluetooth which is amazing to me because it should be a much better sound given that its coming in over a wire without lossy bluetooth compression.

I think the factory camera and such switch automatically since I get a blank screen when I go into reverse. I'm still working with Bimmertech to get my iDrive menus working with the MMI at this time. Currently, I don't get any iDrive menus working over video through the MMI on NBT Evo ID4. They tell me that its only 2016 cars that are having this issue at the moment FWIW.

Another annoyance that I've come across is that in android auto with my phone, night mode doesn't work so I'm blinded by daytime maps at night. My current workaround is to use satellite maps at night as they're darker but its rather annoying. I'm unsure if its the bimmertech module or android auto on my phone to blame for this. I've tried playing around in developer options on my phone to see if i can force this without much luck yet. I haven't tested carplay yet as I found carplay to be somewhat buggy since I'm not used to iOS as my primary device.

One more gripe that I can live with is that directions don't feed to my HUD anymore which is def a bummer. It was really nice to see those on the HUD but given that its an addon unit, I can't fault it too much here.

Can anyone else chime in on the audio quality for playing music and such? This will be a deciding factor for me, as I currently listen to audio via USB port and wouldn't want a too big drop from BT audio quality.

I'm not sure how BT is better than the USB dock connector.

In my case, using the USB dock connector via iDrive 4 is much better than BT. Let alone AUX in the case of this MMI.

I agree, its very strange to me that audio quality sounds somewhat muddy especially when compared to BT.

Update to my iDrive not showing with the MMI. I was able to work with bimmertech support to get it resolved a little bit ago. Everything seems to be in order now so I'll give it a full shakedown this week as I drive more. My main experience will be with android auto but I'll try out the carplay side of things as well but it won't be nearly in depth as the android side of things.

This is how it is in my car - if I can't get at least BT quality with the MMI, its a no go for me.

That's just the nature of AUX, unfortunately. I've tried for weeks with my MMI from UAD to get optimal audio and it's just not happening.

Is there a way to get the HUD integrated with the maps in MMI Plus with Apple CarPlay?

Carplay iOS 13 beta was released.

I wonder if the existing MMI compatible with the update

Am told by bimmertech that the audio issue is isolated to Android phones and only some at that. They told me also that they have no plans to address is as "it's out of their control" or something. Sounds like poor development prioritization to me. Kind of like how they did do a version bump for the patch I applied for my mmi to work with my 2016 nbt Evo unit. Only way to "test" was to keep applying the update until it worked.

Whats the safest and wisest bet right now considering below bullets?
1. Apple carplay (if possible wireless connectivity)
2. HUD integration
3. Steering wheel controls working
4. Preferably using OEM microphone

Thanks in advance!

OEM carplay retrofit is the only one that would leverage OEM HUD.

Unique and Joyeauto provide wireless Carplay and use the steering wheel to navigate through the menu (it doesn't skip to the end or start)

You can also use OEM mic to play music and make phone calls - Carplay mic, however, is the only option to use Siri

It is. The MMI have nothing to do with carplay updates
It just display what phone says. So everybody with a carplay navigation will have the new UI.

What exactly does this do? I have a 2018 F36 which already has wireless Carplay from the factory, does this require additional hardware installed? Does it just enable Android Auto and full widescreen Carplay?

If you are missing widescreen, I believe there is an option to code the OEM Carplay and allow widescreen

There is no OEM Android Auto but this add-on device makes it possible with older head units (i.e. NBT)

I am always curious as to how audio is being feed to iDrive, can anyone explain?

When playing music via Carplay (eg. Spotify or Apple Music), is the audio streaming sent through digital signal or analog?

Keep seeing posts in the forum audio quality is somewhat different via AUX, is this refer to connecting the phone to the OEM AUX input, or through the Bimmertech MMI?

What I want to clarify is if the audio quality connecting via Carplay is on par with connecting directly to iDrive through USB or bluetooth.

Patrys@BimmerTech perhaps you can help answer this?

Thanks.

No. It's not. It's crappy AUX audio. This has already been established earlier in this thread.
