I was thinking this might be a good way to be able to use Waze but am curious how secure the fit is.

I have a very similar item in my car. It is the best cup holder mound IMO. It could be rotated to fit anything from a big GPS to an iPhone 4. http://www.amazon.com/Macally-MCUPXL...er+mount&psc=1

I have 2 that are very similar to that one and another that is larger and longer for holding iPads. They all work great and are super adjustable.

I am not a fan of using the Lightning connector to secure a device. Nice and low profile though.
