Bad news and good news
bad news --- After replacing the drop links noise was gone for 2 days then slowly started up again though much less audible than previous.
Good news--- Then I upgraded my springs and installed the ACS springs(a performance bmw specialist super indy who is booked for weeks in advance locally did this for me). I do not know if it was because the struts were taken apart and reinstalled and whatever was loose now has been tightened up or if the slightly firmer ACS springs have stopped the chatter from the dampers but the car is quiet like a mouse.
300 miles and 1 week later still silence...
So my friends don't accept the noise just don't trust the dealership to be able to solve this for you even if the car is under warranty. Take it to a specialist indy who is a proper mechanic or as I have done kill two birds with one stone with upgraded springs.

edit... 1 month later noise came back now both sides.

Thanks for the update! Do you have adaptive suspension?

sorry to resurrect the thread from dead. I changed the shocks to bilstein b8 and changed both strut mounts(coretco) and both drop links(moog) and changed front brake pads(pagid). I finally have a great handling comfortable totally silent car.

I had this problem when I purchased a car with around 20,000 miles on it. It was carefully inspected by BMW twice and they were unable to find the problem. But finally they did fix it. I am attaching a photo of the receipt to give you an idea what was done to fix it. Looks like the problem was the spring strut mounts. Best of luck. I know it is an upsetting problem.

If the steering rack tensioning block update (Thyssenkrupp) doesn't sort the clunking, I would say it's the standard dampers (M sport in my case) as they have soft high speed compression tuning for comfort.

They shudder too much over tightly packed bumps and sharp hits like road cracks, pot holes and speed ramps etc.

Thanks for the info! I put new upper supports from the brand febi/bilstein. Today I will review the set and let you know if I find anything.

Experiencing exactly the same issues as pretty much everyone on this topic plus a few more, as shown below:

- Clunking over small bumps and uneven ground
- Steering feels very loose, especially at higher speeds, to the point where the vehicle doesn't feel very safe to drive
- The car wants to steer off the road more towards left if not holding the steering wheel
- When engine is turned off and turning the steering wheel left / right there is this clunking / knocking noise coming from the driver's front side, basically where the steering rack bush is located

The steering rack repair bush kit has been replaced but the clunking noise with all the other symptoms came back within 1 week.
Control arms been replaced, noise went for a 1 week, then came back again.
When using a pry bar and touching the steering shaft joint that connects the column to the steering rack, there seems to be play in it.
It has honestly driven me mad as it's been nearly a year I have been trying to sort this out, spend thousands of pounds and still can't get it sorted.
Taken the vehicle to my local BMW dealer and apparently "everything's fine".

My only other option would now be to replace the drop links, steering shaft and maybe get a reconditioned rack fitted - then will need coding of course - and hopefully this will sort out the issues.

Really not sure what else to consider doing, would appreciate any thoughts or advice

Car is F30 335d 2014 model
