VERY Noisy Engine?

Just seen the video. Sounds to me like knocking so I'd second the injector idea. In modern systems the diesel is injected in several pulses which helps to reduce noise - could be that a faulty injector isn't getting the initial pulses right which would cause more diesel knock later in the cycle.
Could be difficult to diagnose though - probably a diesel specialist job. |

Rather than assuming and guessing what the problem might be, why don't you get a diagnostic lead for £10? The software is a free download.
For £10 you can at least narrow down the issue. A diagnostic tool is a must have especially considering how cheap you can get them. |

UPDATE: Took the car to German Auto Works at the weekend. Had a call today saying the Technician has taken a look and wants to dismantle the front end as the car is reading -40 Degrees. Which is correct, but it has been like this since I got it. Numerous sensors later I was going to chase the wiring in my own time.
Bit gutted that’s all they’ve come up with tbh! Apparently sounds normal, which again is worrying? It did drive fine to the garage little loser but probably not as loud as the video. Don’t think the outside temp sensor would cause it sound that way surely? Told them it’s a red herring I think and he’s going to take another look tomorrow! |

Is your car's name "little loser" now or did you mean its running looser...? 😉 Thanks for the update. Multiple temperature sensors in there but could be related to electrical gremlins elsewhere.

I had a coolant temperature sensor go wrong on my car, looking at the hidden menu it would fluctuate between normal readings and -40. When it was giving the wrong temperature the car was mental!
As fuel injection is a closed system, fuel quantity determined by various sensors the car really thought it was -40 and would increase the fuel injected - a bit scary when accelerating and the car almost surges forward! Would have been keen to see what effect it had on a rolling road!

If you say it's always read -40 then I think this sensor would not be related to the engine running.
Usually there is a sensor in the block that measures the heat of the water, then another (usually part of the MAF) to monitor intake air temperature. You really need to get someone with ISTA to see what's going on, I echo the previous remarks about diagnostics being essential and how cheap it is to buy a cable If you're anywhere near Potters Bar I'd see what codes etc comes up. Of course there is still interpretation of the results but at least it's a start. If all electronic checks are OK then it could still be mechanical One easy check is to remove the auxilliary belt to eliminate the water pump and alternator and aircon compressor, run the engine briefly and see if the noise goes away. Not sure on the N47 engine but that is very easy on a lot of BMW engines |

Cool! Thanks all. I will wait for the garage to call back and get them to check the temp sensor wiring then! Then see if that does make difference. Just strange it has always read this way. Off day it has had a moment and read properly, so there I think it will be a nick in the wire somewhere which is why I was going to try sort it.
They are a germa auto specialist so I am hoping they have read the car themselves... |

UPDATE: Collected the car last Saturday. Nearly 7 weeks I think it was in the workshop, wrong parts got sent, then the BMW specialist went off etc etc.
Anyway picked it up, started it up and never sounded so nice, lovely and quiet, makes me realise I was maybe a bit oblivous to it getting worse over time! Had a few cold starts (not left it running this time!!) and it has fired on the button and settled. Drives absolutely fantastic. Really happy with how it drives, the best it has and it's a joy to be back in it tbh! Got some discount due to time etc and they did injectors and seals as well (Main thing was timing chain replaced). Invoice came in at £1,385. Was quite happy with that tbh! Less then planned but as said it was discounted due to time. Anyway, plans back on to sell in Feb still but thoguht I'd stick an update up! Thanks to all that helped I know it is sketchy lisrtening to a video and I know I mad emistakes leaving it running each morning to warm up! Live and learn! Thanks again |
