BMW OEM AGM Battery

From the various OEM AGM Battery sizes for the F3x series, it now seems that BMW has standardized the replacement as a 92AH Battery Part Number 61-21-2-353-812.

As 70, 80 and 90 AH batteries were all used originally, the battery has to be coded and registered in the vehicle’s electronics.

As 92AH is not a setting option, people just use the 90AH setting.

So, giving that sometimes these electronic systems are so touchy, what impact on charging would a 100AH Battery as the car is only looking for a 90AH Battery Max?

While on the subject, what brand car battery do you consider the best and most reliable for a BMW Replacement?

Good timing. Have the exact same query.

Warning, I'm not trying to answer the question as I don't know:

I always assumed that the battery registration process and the requirement for battery capacity information was directly tied to the charging strategy with efficient dynamics. Our cars will use a rudimentary brake regen system and the car tries to keep a certain percentage of capacity free for that purpose. That may also be why knowing the age of the battery is important. So it can look at the voltage of the battery and calculate how much capacity it has. It's using the voltage, max capacity rating and age of the battery to estimate the current capacity level and adjusting the charging strategy accordingly. So I doubt there's any way to damage the car's electronics. At worst you might just kill the battery a little faster or use it inefficiently.

To answer your question, I've used Duralast Platinum batteries in past BMWs with great results. They also all interestingly seemed to be made in Germany.

Staying on topic, what is the expected life of the original battery? Mine has a relatively easy life, given it is garaged? it’s a 2016.

I think it is about 5 years but they can last longer.

Mine completed 8 years this month and still going strong (although I may replace it very soon). Rough life. Never garaged, lived all its life in the north.

The BMW settings for which battery is in the car and registration of that battery.

The AGM in my SULEV e46 was 14 years old when a failed alternator and a long limp home killed it. Dekah made good batteries.
Replaced with Bosch AGM. Of all the choices it seemed the best of the limited options.
