Yay or nay?
So many posts saying they do nothing, so many posts saying they just bought them. |

Just for visual. Back in the day... Pontiac GTO used to have a functional hood scoop, but come to find out, at higher speeds, the air flow went over the scoop and actually the engine started drawing air from a low pressure area...OOPS!? So the scoops were later on turned backwards to draw air from the cowl (at the base of the windshield) as this was a high pressure area for air. Reality? This produced very little in terms of increased HP but sounded really good. Fact is the main item here was the air density (cool air) which caused the increase of power. Rather than draw air from the engine compartment, the scoops allowed air from outside to be drawn into the engine. I believe that every 10F drop in air temp on your intake is about 1% HP gain. So your 300HP 335i would gain 3HP for a 10F drop in temperature if the scoop was to actually work. So the real question is, does the scoop give you colder air for your intake?? I do not know.

The stock f30 already has pretty much the optimal air intake. The intake air is ducted from the high pressure area at the grill, and even calling that area a high pressure area is misleading. Today's cars don't really have a high pressure area at the base of the windshield like the older cars. (They have been wind-tunnel-tested to death in an effort to eliminate drag.) A hood scoop might look good, but at best it would be only good for evacuating hot air from under the hood.
A hood scoop at the leading edge of the hood, like this one, is the right idea if a hood scoop is necessary. Even then, that is not the best placement for "air grabbing" this car has the right idea, openings in the grill feed tubes going to the carbs (Kinda like the stock f30)

I had a 2002 Mustang GT with a non-functional hood scoop and thought it was silly. I was equally annoyed when I found out the fender vent Bimmerangs in my 2018 F32 don't do anything. They were actually open on pre-LCI models.
