Nope all went fine. You just need to have the correct tools.

Yes, you're right!
I just noticed today that on italian Bmw webside, on the M Performance optionals page, they recently include 335i xdrive and 435i xdrive between cars that fit M Performance LSD!

Any info on what the cost is to rebuild this? I can't seem to find any part numbers for the internals.

Not a rebuild, it's an easy drop in.

Cost is about 5-6 hours labor.

You're referring to the internals, correct?

... the context of my question is let's say I put the M Performance LSD in today and in 75,000 miles I would like to rebuild/replace the worn clutch(packs)....

I've just installed the M Performance LSD on my 435i and I'm very pleased with the improved handling and fun!
Not lots of opportunities to test it, but the car seems clearly more inclined to oversteer on tight corner (because of absence/limitation of internal rear tyre spinning) and got much more traction, even on the "simple" DTC mode.
Must-to-have for me

http://www.gse-getriebeservice.de/er...erentiale.html

It's a german Company offering repair kits or refurbished LSD i.e. for the M3 E46.
Long time short. Probably easiest way is to go for a complete refurbished LSD Box in Exchange for your old one. Assume this will be priced around $1'000.- without labour.

On a quick search I could not find a Price for F3x refurbished M Performance LSD. Guess it's not yet time for that, but E46 prices give you an idea.

So can someone explain the difference between these two (from the same vendor)...

1. https://www.getbmwparts.com/parts/in...&siteid=214672

2. https://www.getbmwparts.com/partloca...catalogid=4462

... seems like they are the same part number... with very different cost.

The only thing that makes sense is one of them is the LSD internal and one of them includes the entire final drive assembly.

You are most likely correct. The more expensive one is described as being a "Full replacement differential, no modification of existing differential necessary".

...So I went through this entire thread searching for the string "weld".

Any idea whether the M Performance LSD has a welded or bolted ring gear? The stock differential has a welded ring gear, but I'm hoping this M Performance LSD has a bolted ring gear to make rebuilds easier?

I have no idea about the M-Perf LSD since I'm really interested in the Quaife myself, but I'm quite sure they are all welded. It was a engineering/design choice by BMW to the best of my knowledge. The swap isn't hard with the right tools which is just like any other job. At least one poster in this thread who did the job with the right tools did it in under 2 hours.

Forgive me...I'm a diff noob...

The swap of the entire assembly isn't too difficult as long as you have a lift and a diff/transmission jack + other tools.

But I'd rather be able to just put in new clutch plates or at least be able to swap the entire diff carrier once it comes time to rebuild? All of this would seem to be easier with a bolted design instead of a welded design.

That'd be awesome if my 335i wasn't totalled by grandma pulling out in front of me. But my F80 came with the diff pre-installed

If I still had the F30x I'd be all over it.

You can swap the whole unit but it's significantly more expensive up front due to core deposit etc.
The welded crown wheel was chosen to reduce weight and size
http://www.zf.com/corporate/en_de/pr...wn_wheel.shtml
If you really wanted a bolted crown wheel then you'd likely need an entirely different housing than stock since the stock was designed around the smaller size and weight of the welded crown wheel.
You simply need the right tools and when I say right tools I mean specialty puller tools designed to remove this type of welded diff, not just common garage tools and lift/jack. Darkiedm4 said he did it in 1.5 hours.

Not sure if everyone's following (or if I'm correct), but it seems like the MSRP and price for this has changed (decreased).

Most of us (or I think I did) got it for nearly that price, when you factored in installation at the dealer ($2700 all in).

Yes, that's true!
One month ago I bought mine by a friend of mine, who sold its 435i Cabrio to buy an M4 and only then I realized that BMW decreased the LSD price
