Question Humming/Acoustic Whine

Hey folks,

I've noticed my car makes a consistent humming sound when I approach highway speeds. It is most noticeable if you stay in comfort and starts at around 80km/h. You can really notice it if you get up to 80-100 and then do zero to moderate acceleration. Wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar? I thought it might be from bent wheels or a wheel bearing going.

I brought it to the dealer as I have the extended warranty and they are already fixing an AC issue but they have not been much help. They acknowledge the noise, but say it is from 4 "Choppy" tires, that are not BMW "star" rated and from the M performance exhaust as well.

I'm pretty annoyed by the tire comment as they were put on brand new by the BMW dealer (different then this one - out of area) and I had an alignment done a couple weeks after brining the car home. Has anyone experienced choppy tire wear before and know what caused it?

Could the sounds be the exhaust drone I know some people dislike between 2K to 3K RPM? Appreciate any suggestions.

The MPPSK exhaust drones around 2k RPM in sport mode. It does have a bit of a whining sound in comfort mode.

Interesting. Thanks for the reply. I notice it most when in comfort. Wonder if that is it…

No prob. The whining may be from ASD but I've never tried disabling it with coding to rule it out.

I never thought of that! Might give that a try and see what changes. Thanks again.

Ask them to put on a set of rims with "good" tires so you can see the difference. Tire/tread pattern can cause noises, but I'd ask them to prove that's the noise you're hearing before taking it at their word. Surely the dealer has a set of rims they could throw on for a quick drive.

is your car a zf 8 speed? i believe i heard of other f30 owners complaining of the transmission making a whining sound, almost makes it sound like you have a supercharger haha.

Nope, mine is the 6 speed manual. Thanks for the suggestion though!

I disabled ASD with Bimmercode as a test and the whining sound in comfort mode was very decreased. I'd say the sound you're hearing is the exhaust and amplified by ASD.

I ended up turning back on ASD since the cabin was way too quiet with the windows rolled up.

I tried disabling ASD as suggested but can't say right now that I've seen the desired effect yet. Just hope that the very soft whining of my 440i (heard only at around 30mph from new) will diminish or even go away

It's the ASD!!! Just disabled it and it is soooo much better. The cabin is significantly quieter in comfort which I'm still on the fence about what I'd prefer overall if it didn't amplify the drone to a consistent, repetitive tone. However, with that gone it is a no brainer for me. As it is gone and I'm very happy .

Thanks again for the suggestion!!

No prob. There are other cars/engines that ASD can emulate so maybe try others to see if they sound better. I'm not sure where the setting is but it's in the expert mode. There may be an ASD volume setting somewhere in the expert settings as well. I've never dug that deep regarding ASD settings but may be worth a shot if you opt to keep it but tweak the output.

Edit:

For ASD volume you can tweak the Power Class setting in expert mode.

https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1319639

For engine tone the setting is in the Engine setting in expert mode.

It should be instant but someone in the thread I posted above said their change didn't take effect until the second time they drove for some reason.
