Creaking in da rear

Hey guys/gals

2016 3040i 20k miles with M Sport Package & Track Handling Package. When I get in/out of the vehicle there's a small creaking noise coming from the rear. I don't hear it over the sound of engine/exhaust. I only notice it while parked with engine off. The local BMW mechanic says he "can't duplicate the problem"

I'm guessing it's just some sort of bushing or something that needs a little grease??? Maybe it's something I can lube up myself? Can ya point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance.

20K miles is very early for bushing/ball joint problems, but I've had the exact same noise (two times) when exiting the car (on my 5er). Both times it was the rear ball joint. It connects the wheel bearing carrier to the swing arm and can't be lubed. I would think this would be covered under your warranty.

My car has 75k and has just started getting the notorious rear end creak on one side, but I agree that his are too young to jump to that conclusion. My e36 and e38 also had this problem over 100k, makes sense since BMW rear ends are basically the same as they were 20 years ago. This weekend I'm injecting some grease into it to see if noise reduces before I pull the trigger on a pair of new ball joints.

Whatever is affecting OP's ride should definitely be covered.

Is the noise present regardless of emergency brake engagement?

The mechanic finally reproduced the noise. He said its the parking brake. I always use the parking brake when parked so the weight of the car doesn't rest on the transmission.
I'll do some testing with & without the parking brake. The service advisor said it can't be fixed. I have trouble believing that.

Parking brake noise is basically unavoidable. Why does it bother you? I'm used to it since I've always had to use my parking brake on my cars. How can they fix two friction materials rubbing up against each other making noise when the suspension geometry is slightly changed? There's no way.

I had mine changed under warranty. Creaking noise coming from rear when getting into/exiting car. There were about 70K km at the time.

I had the same issue and discovered it was also the parking brake. In my case, I was not setting it hard enough and just the little play was enough to make the creaking. My solution was to pull up harder on the parking handle which solved it for me.

I've had quite a few cars in my life including other BMW's (E36 M3 & and E46 M3) and none of them displayed this. Why does it bother me??? Because I work hard for my money & a vehicle of this value shouldn't creek like an antique door.

Great advise, I just went to the garage and tried it out. Couldn't duplicate the noise. Perhaps the solution is simply applying more force when I set the brake. Admittedly I usually don't use much force unless I'm on an incline.

Thank buddy > appreciate the tip!

I push firmly on the brake pedal while I pull up on the emergency brake. No issues for me.

E-Brake Creaking Fixed!

I had this exact same issue on my 2015 F36 - slight creaking from rear driver's wheel well upon entering/exiting vehicle with e-brake engaged.

I read another post somewhere on this forum (wish I remembered where so I could share credit...) the trick was to go out to a 'safe' area and drive the car at low speed and apply the e-brake to slow down the vehicle (i.e. slow down from 20km/hr -10km/hr). Keep the lock button depressed on the lever so as not to actually engage the mechanism, simply pull gently to allow some friction. You will see a warning pop-up in your cluster, just release the brake by placing it back down and releasing the button before the vehicle actually comes to a stop.

After doing this gently three times while driving (once down the driveway and twice more rolling gently to a stop at red lights), the creaking sound was gone when I parked and got out - immediate fix.

Same issue even when I strongarm the lever, only noticed on driver's side. Anyone know if the left/right cables are independent? I wonder if the driver's side is loose because the passenger side is already tight.
