Post Michelin or Pirelli

Alright guys need to replace my current all season with a new set. Currently on Pirelli cinturato run flats gonna stay run flats need the added safety.

Is it worth making the leap to michilins primacy mx m4 run flat or should I just go back to a new set of Pirellis.
Or if somebody has another run flat they can recommend I'm all ears.

225/45/18 square if it heps
Thanks

Just to confirm: current tires are Pirelli Cinturato P7 All Season tires?

Planning to stay with all season tires?

I am facing the same decision with my 2016 435 convertible. My research puts the Michelins as the better choice, with a better overall ride quality and better grip. So, I am going with the Primacy MXM4's. Years ago I switched from Pirelli to Michelin on my Porsche and felt better ride quality, so I am confident with these for the beamer.

Same ufortunately looks like outside factors have made the decision for me tire places around me say the dont have any Michelin in stock and one place even told me Michelin is pushing to get rid of the primacy mxm4 in favor of the cross climate not sure how much truth there is to that. But booked in for a Saturday appointment on Pirelli again we go.

I would suggest to go with Michelin. The Pirelli's just don't cut it for me.

Actually it would be better to go non-RFT though. But I can understand your concerns on safety.

Don't believe local tire retailers who are trying to sell you what they have in stock. Research it on TireRack. Give them a call to find out the real story. TireRack can ship tires to you or directly to one of their local installers.

I'd go with Michelin's over Pirelli. Do yourself a favor and upgrade your tire size to 245/40-18. They fit perfectly on the stock 8x18 wheels. The wider size handles and rides so much better

Mine has Pirelli Cinturato P7s on it now, too. First time I've ever had Pirelli tires that I know of. I like them just fine. Good enough grip, quiet, and seem to wear well.

But I've always had Michelins, and never been disappointed. Always been very grippy and very quiet, lasts well also. My favorites have always been Michelin Pilot Sports, but I don't think those are run flat. I'd be fine with the Pirellis but given the option, I'd probably go with Michelin, too.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys I went back with Pirelli. It's what was available and I could get installed in the time frame I needed it is what it is. I'm a big Michelin fan boy for sure got a set pilot sport 4s for the summer just we arn't in the weather range yet here. Few more weeks we will be good and I'll swap back to those.

Michelin, Pirelli, Bridgestone, Continental, and Goodyear are all so close in performance for a daily driver that their differences are virtually negligible.

Michelins have attained an almost 'jewelry' status on BMW forums, even though their price/performance ratio doesn't necessarily justify it over the equivalent competitor for a daily.

Maybe on the track with multiple sets you can spot differences, but a Brigestrone S-04 is going to work 99.99995% as well as a Michelin Super Sport on your average outing to town.

There isn't a better tire on the planet in the wet than a Continental Extreme Contact DW. If I live in a place that rains, it's the only tire for me.

I have 225/45-18 Perelli P7 RFT's on my F32 and looking to replace them this fall with Michelins. I did not realize that I can choose 245/40-18 size. Have you actually done this? Also, seriously considering changing to non-RFT's.

Yes, I have been driving on 245/40-18 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S for over two years now. They are the same diameter as the 225/45-18 so they are a compatible upgrade. Incredible handling improvement.

Thanks, that is good to hear. I was shopping for 245's on Tire Rack and chatted with one of their tech reps. The rep also confirmed the 245's would fit my rims but stated I will run the risk of rubbing against the wheel well because the 245 is not only wider, but taller. I have an x drive with MPBBK. Do you think I would have tire clearance issues with 245's?

I second the Michelin PS4S. My M5 came with Perellis (PZ4) and would light the tires up easily 3rd gear from a roll in 2wd mode at 20-70mph. After going to PS4S's it would barely lose grip in 2nd gear. They are miles ahead of any other tire I've tried. Amazing in the rain too.

The guy you talked to is wrong if he said that a 245/40-18 is taller than a 225/45-18. Maybe he was thinking of a 245/45-18. That is taller. (But it still would not rub)

Absolutely no compatibility issues with mounting a 245/40-18 on a 8.0"x 18" wheel ET34

Thanks. Tire Rack was referring to the 245/45R18 as being too tall for their recommendation to replace my 225/45R18's. When I circled back they did state the the 245/40R18 would work.

Actually a lot of people do run 245/45-18. Depending on the exact tire it's about 26.7" in diameter compared to stock being about 26.0"

That amounts to about 0.35" higher in the wheel well. That takes up more of the tire to fender gap and provides the most comfortable ride with higher sidewalls to cushion rough roads.

The 245/40-18 still provides the best ratio for handling. And switching to a non-runflat tire like the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S provides a noticeable increase in comfort over stock runflats

Ok, maybe I will reconsider the 245/45R18 but I was taken back by Tire Racks position (twice) that they could not recommend that size. I appreciate the ride difference with non-RFT's but I am thinking of staying with RFT's for peace of mind and looking at Michelin Pilot Super Sport ZP. I do not have, nor have room for a spare tire and would at least need an inflator kit with non-RFT's. Do you carry a spare, jack and inflator kit?

I've had non-runflats for almost three years. I've never had a flat tire. I've hit potholes that would have surely damaged a runflat. I replaced a couple of runflats with pothole damage before I ditched them. The go-flats are softer so they handle potholes without damage.

Although I haven't had a flat, about once a year I pick up a nail that gives me a slow leak. The TPMS system tells me that I have a low tire. I fill it up and if it's low again in a couple of days then I take it to my local tire shop. They find the nail, patch it from the inside and I'm on my way.

I carry a Slime Kit with a compressor which I've never had to use, a scissor jack that fits the BMW jack pads, a 24" harbor freight breaker bar and a 17mm wheel removal socket.

On trips I carry a full sized spare consisting of a used BMW 400M wheel that I bought for $125 and one of my old runflat tires that is not worn. It has the same 26.0 diameter as my performance tires.

The spare is in a tire bag which makes it easy to belt in on the backseat to hide trip luggage in the trunk.

A space saver spare would only save me about three inches of storage on top of the spare in the trunk. A space saver is the same 26" diameter so it takes up the same trunk floor space.

On a trip, the 50 mile limit of the space saver would interrupt my trip by forcing me to immediately search for a tire shop to repair or replace my tire. That ain't gonna be successful on a Sunday night in the rain somewhere! A full size spare would allow me to complete my journey and find a tire shop when it's convenient. If I need a tire, then TireRack can ship me the exact tire that I need in 1-2 days.
