For our American poster, we must point out that this tax is only levied in the purchase price from new, as a one-off. Annual road tax is £145 a year thereafter plus £330 "luxury tax" if the list price of your car exceeds £40,000. We don't have an annual property tax on cars the way some States do.

I'm an ex-pat, but after 20+ years here and a naturalization certificate, I suppose I am American.

As for the "luxury tax", my state does it big time. It's the price we pay for no state income tax. I just priced the local registration fees for a 2016 X5 and it came to about $800. My 14-year old SUV (gotta love the no rust desert) cost me $105. Oh, and we spell "tax" f-e-e here. Did I mention we have the second worst education system in the US?

Just after taking this photo of my car with my son's F-Type, as I drove away, my phone made some beeping sounds. I stopped, no messages, no notifications so what caused the beeping? Something made me look at the contacts in the car and lo and behold, my contact list has downloaded, a week after I first set it up.

A gratuitous excuse for a quick photo.
