The question though is how obtainable will petrol or diesel be after 2030 and at what price?

There will still be millions of ICE powered cars on the road then, not to mention all the trucks and HGVs. But yes, the cost of fuel may well be a lot higher than now.

Are they £40k?
There are a few about, although not as many as 18 months ago

Will keep my car for as long as I can and hopefully my petrolhead 10-year old will be able to have a bit of fun before the Greta cult has been served all their demands.

I'm still looking at 981 or 718 Cayman / Cayman S or Cayman GTS..
The prices of a new spec'd up 718 Cayman / Cayman S Cayman GTS (specs near as can be like for like are
Cayman £59,290 (£14,060 options)
Cayman S £67,726 (£12,736 options)
Cayman GTS4.0 £75,059 (£9,669 options)

I'm struggling to see good low (sub 20k) mileage 981 for < £45k at the moment and these are 2014/16....

Going second hand almost doesn't make sense at the moment.

I'm just struggling with the wisdom of splurging a lot of cash on a new car at the moment when the economy seems to be on a knife edge... And I have savings and am mortgage free...

981 over a 718 all day long, used car prices are mad atm though and will surely come down at some point.

You can still get your hands on a low mileage Z4M Roadster for well within the 40k limit - this one's even in Interlagos Blue!

Yes, when I was looking at what to do with our cars a couple of years ago a nice Cayman 981 S with a decent spec and lowish mileage could be had for sub-40k. However, that doesn't appear to be the case now; as you say, mid-40's is more like it unless it's something with high mileage and/or low spec and if you want a manual the choice becomes even more limited...

Makes a low mileage GT4 for 70ish look a bargain!

As nice as it is I think I'd rather buy an M2, my boys will fit in then!

Yes although for someone who's unlikely to track the car (like me) a new GTS for similar money arguably makes more sense (assuming of course 70k on a two seater sports coupe can ever be called sensible!).

I'm the same, a new GTS 4.0 would be on my list if I wanted a 2 seater sports car.

If you need four usable seats the M2's definitely a good shout - ditto an M4 although I must admit my preference would also be for the smaller car. But if two seats will do I think it would be a Cayman for me (or possibly a Boxster).

Still love the looks and drive of a nippy little mini.

I can never shake this car off. You'd need to sort the exhaust but then you could also get a bore one for the budget and tinker with a fairly efficient little 2.0 L dinosaur juice car.
