Tell me about games consoles!

I haven't had one since the Wii but was thinking I've got a spare room and will turn it in to a games room. Since the wife has declined to play ping pong, table football or pool with me on a regular basis it seems that a decent games console is on the cards.

Would like to have a decent driving game (probs have rooms for a proper seat and wheels too), especially one that allows for Nurburgring practice (Gran Turismo?), and then games that allow you to explore other worlds (Grand Theft?). The wife likes the idea of role playing sci-fi/fantasy games (apparantly not the gold bikini type unfortunately!).

Thoughts as to which one would be best of the PS4 or Xbox One?

By far the best console driving game is Grand Turismo. There is a new one due to be released (GT7), but it keeps getting put back. PS only.

If it is driving games you are most interested in, the have a butchers at iracer (PC), and the Fanatec hardware. The ultimate home gaming set up.

Not sure I want to spend money on a gaming PC, as the reality is I don't have so much time to play on it. Just thinking that might be nice to have the option and especially over Christmas when for the first time in years we will spend it in our own home, and I'm planning on having 17 days in a row off work!

Sticking with consoles, then a PS4 and GT6 or GT7 when it comes out is the pick of the bunch. Most realistic console driving game in my opinion (not graphically.....dynamically).

Others would be Forza on xbox. Not that I am current with consoles these days, but xbox is usually considered the better overall gaming platform.

As for iracing, you don't need a massively high spec PC to run it, but probably a little more than you'd pay for a console. £500 rather than £250 ish.

If you ever want to race against others online, then iracer is the clear leader.

My son is going to be getting an elaborate iracing set up soon.

Most reviews I've ever seen suggest the gfx of the PS4 is far better than the Xbox one, and you can see it in the screenshots.

I have both, if it had to be just one it would be the PS4.

But that said I'd probably go for a PS4 Pro if I was buying now.

What's different with the pro?

For realism, Project CARS on PS4. Its akin to a simulator rather than arcade and you really MUST have a wheel with force feedback otherwise its virtually undrivable. With the correct set up (wheel, seat), its excellent. You can really feel the dynamics of the cars (everything from road cars, karts, touring cars- E30 M3, to modern road and race) Even has its own non licensed style F1, F2 and open wheelers (and historic F1). Loads of real circuits and road tracks. Lots of tuning too. Very geeky. Doing a good race, properly set up; its incredibly immersive and bloody knackering!

I have the Thrustmaster T300RS with the Ferrari F1 add on race wheel and the Playseat Challenge fold up Alcantara seat. Bril combo!

PS Project CARS has The Ring too

Very nice

What would that cost all in? Assume I have a TV already.

PS4 Pro for sure, also PlayStation seems to be getting more exclusives than the Xbox franchise.

Having said that, if you love your games. Get both!

Ok so seems PS4 is the way to go. What does the Pro do better? Is everything backwards compatible?

Definitely not getting two- one is more than enough!

PS4 - couple of hundred (depends on version and deal)
Seat - £170 (direct from their UK store)
Thrustmaster - £250
Ferrari wheel - £130
Project CARS - £20-40 (Amazon etc)

Total - quite a bit (but worth it!)

As I said, for me, its a brilliant combo and very realistic.

I guess its down to how immersive you want it. You could just settle with the usual PS4 controller sat on sofa but you'll get 10% out of the current batch of racing sims/games.

£800 all in seems decent value. How much does the Ferrari wheel add to the standard thrustmaster?

Do these consoles output in HD or Ultra HD?

Not a huge amount to be honest. There are lots of extra buttons to configure but actually most arent needed whilst driving. Its great to configure specific buttons for DRS, KERS and brake balance etc and it feels really good when driving. The rotary dials in the middle are dummies but the rest of the buttons and switches work.

The great thing about the T300RS is you can change wheels to different ones. Simple grub screw retains the hub.

And it looks cool

I think the standard PS4/Xbox One do 720p-1080p depending on the game, but the newer PS4 Pro/Xbox One s support 4k/UHD video, but I'm not sure if the games are rendered in 4k/UHD.

If you want 4k/UHD then PC is the way to go. Building one is pretty easy, and you can budget one easily using this website: http://www.logicalincrements.com/

No, not too fussed, just curious. Really don't want the hassle of a PC, just want to plug it in and get going whenever I fee like it.

Looks a great setup, used to have a Thrustmaster Ferrari (pre windows 7) and pedals.

Having force feedback definitely adds to the overall experience.

These days I tend to do flight / Space sims rather than cars.

What kit do you use for those?

That reminds me of the debate I have with anyone I speak to who watches the new Westworld series!
