Drivetrain malfunction F31 320D 2013, turbo and EGR-valve problem
I was driving home when I noticed that the cruise control wasn't doing its job well, and the engine was reving a little strange.
Then I got the drivetrain message, a few minutes later saw som white smoke behind the car. So I stopped. I also noticed, more after I had stopped, a strange noise that I hadn't heard before, seemed to be a little rattling as I increased the throttle. I had to tow the car as this seemed pretty serious. They later told me that the EGR-valve need to be replaced. The rattling was coming from the turbo, it should to be replaced. It was supposed to cost about $4000. So I had to decline that and I'm now going to take the car home. First off, the EGR-valve seems easy enough to replace. But the question is, do you have to code/program something later as you replace parts like this? I read somewhere that you should, but I've also seen people say that it's not needed at all. About the turbo, it seems like a common problem, the rattling noise. is it just annoying or is it on its way to break or something like that? I haven't noticed it before this incident where I had to stop on the highway after I saw some smoke. It looks like the problem was with the EGR-valve and that the turbo isn't really necessary to replace or what do you think? They want to make money of course so they had no other option that to replace everything. I'm not going to pay like one third of the car's value to have all that changed. Id rather do it myself. just the labor would cost about as much as I could get a used turbo or another brand for. |

Got codes for us?
I'm unsure about the Mitsubishi turbo used on the 320d, but the Garrett turbo in the North American 328d doesn't rattle at all. I would fix the EGR first, even with second hand parts if you need to.

So I'll get the EGR-Valve, probably look into a company around here that I heard reconditions turbos. So maybe a repaired OEM or another brand new turbo. Also regarding the programming, do you think it has to be done when replacing parts like this? I just remember reading that you have to program in these new parts or the car will think the old ones are there. They could brake otherwise or something like that. |

No programming needed for egr valve nor the turbo as long as they're the same parts intended for the car.
If there is shaft play, then yes, you should replace the turbo.
