F30 vs G20

I tried to find information about the B58 in the M340i but it all does to pages about the B58 in the F30 340i. Is there a difference between the 2 engineers or is the increased output coming from a tune only? Is it just a 340i B58 with MPPSK tune jammed in a G20?

It should be the unit going in the Z4 M40i.

The New B58 changes include:

A new fuel injection system which bumps up the pressure from 200 bar to 350 bar therefore reducing the amount of soot particles up to 50%, a new one piece chain drive which decreased friction up to 30% it was a two piece before , a new split cooling system which helps reduce the amount of soot particles and better cools the combustion roof, wall thickness was optimized and crankshaft was also optimized saving a total of around 4 kilograms, a new cylinder head which brings advantages to thermal management, the turbo charger was redefined and now uses a integrated manifold. Overall the new "Tü1" update outperforms the original b58 in almost every aspect from weight, emissions, improved acoustics(exhaust sounds more redefined and clean) and increased power and torque. The B58B30O1 was a minor update. The number at the end can vary from 1-9 with 9 being the most major changes.

Edit: if you look at realoem.com you can see the new diagrams of the b58 revision. Just select either the brand new x5 g05 40i or z4 m40i g29.

So is it worth it, getting a F30?

If you have the money get the G20. That interior is gorgeous. I sat in one yesterday and it almost made me make a really bad financial decision. Plus, a revised engine generally means more reliability or fuel efficiency or more power. If money isn't a factor then pay more and get the m340i G20.

To me, first gen on any body style is a no go. They usually have bugs and things they have to work out for a year or two before they're mostly perfect. Of course there is a HP and TQ bump from F30 to G20 but the best thing about the new G20 is the CLAR platform which is lighter and stiffer than the F30 platform. There has also been a revision to the steering wheel feedback allowing you to have more road feel and connection with what the tires are doing. Although that aspect lacks in my 340 its plenty fast and I absolutely love it.

I always follow this advice, and I just bought an f36 with this very plan in place. Wait a year or 2 to make sure there are no gremlins that need sorting.

If you care about having a manual, this F30 is the last interesting 3 series. Looks like it's either ///M or nothing with BMW now. I'm also not a fan at all of the exterior styling. The interior is nicely upgraded, finally competitive in the entry-lux sport sedan market. But yeah, skipping the G20 for sure. I'm getting an oil analysis done in a month or two, if there's any issues, this baby is getting traded in for a C7 Vette.

I hear that! I factory ordered mine with the manual since there were none on the lot...probably one of the last production 340's with a 6spd.

C7 Vette is a sick car, if you go that route good luck! No coupes for me with a new baby n all lol

I also picked up a 6spd AWD that I had to order, as much as I love the Manual I might give it up next time around if I'm making M money by them. The Alpha Romeo catches my eye also though.
