should I?

Having the same dilemma...

about to purchase a used 2014 BMW 435i with 79,000 miles.
To purchase extended warranty or not is the question?!?!

J.D. Power Data gave this exact year/make/model a 10 in mechanical dependability. my concern is really just cause of the high milage.

I actually had a good experience with my previous purchase of an extended warranty.

Back in 2012, I purchased a 2006 Lexus is350 with 89,000 miles
Purchased the extended warranty & within the 1st year I had a major engine issue, which then required them to do a full engine rebuild priced at over $9,000.
which was 100% covered!
thus the warranty paid for it self at $1,500.

mind you BMW be way more expensive:
1yr - $2700
2yr - $3700
3yr - $4400

IS IT WORTH IT??? or NAH????

I just bought a 2015 328i msport at 47k miles. I went with an aftermarket warranty. Freedom warranty is the company. $3700 for 84 months/100k miles from the time of warranty purchase. That's for their "Complete" policy which is the highest you can buy. If you read through it covers just about anything you should ever be concerned with. The items it doesn't cover are no different than BMW.

I would highly recommend looking into this rather than the overpriced BMW extended warranty that leaves you high and dry 2-3 years from now. IMO.

I wanted to follow up now that I've completed my first experience with a service claim. The total process took two days from dropping off my car to picking it up. The only reason the repair took this long is because there's a 'waiting period' with the warranty company. Once the Indy reports the claim the warranty company then sends the claim to an underwriter. That was seamless and fortunately my Indy (Eurowise here in Charlotte) runs their shop like true professionals. These guys stay slammed! They handled the entire process. All I did was drop the car off for a diagnosis (even though I already knew what was causing the door lock not to work) and they took it from there. Paid the deductible plus tax and was out the door. $137 for a new door lock actuator. The actual cost would have been $500.

Although there is a big investment upfront for the warranty and this was a small claim I still feel good about the purchase. If/when something else goes out I know I'm covered. Evap core, heater blower, anything with the engine... this warranty will pay for itself in spades.

Anyone else out there have experience with extended warranties?

I would get a warranty but I have been very unlucky with my 2013 328. You can read all about in below threads. Equivalent to USD 42K in repairs!

Similar dilemma!

I have a similar dilemma too.
I just bought the 2017 430i CPO over the weekend. Retired Service loaner with 23k on the car. I was offered the below:

1) extended warranty. 9 years from in-service date (i.e. 7 years from now) or 100k miles for $3.5k. This is the Easy Care Vehicle Service Contract, Stated Care program. https://easycare.com/vehicle-service-contracts/ The car still has ~2 years of manufacturer warranty left + 1 year of CPO limited warranty, so essentially adding another 4 years of warranty to the car.

2) maintenance package (BMW MPU). 5 years from now, or 75k for $2.7k.

Not to hijack the thread, but would like to get your thoughts too!

Most credit unions also sell Mechanical Breakdown Coverage, which are pretty much extended warranties.

For my 2017 F31 w/ about 17k on the odo, I was quoted $4500 for bumper-to-bumper coverage for 72/75K from today, with a $500 deductible.

Yep, its worth it

Recently had the 335i in to the dealer for recall. Shocked when I looked in on the progress and saw the tech putting rear brakes on. Surprised to find out the car has extended service and warranty (I'm 3rd owner) so no cost and all service covered until summer of 2020. Yahoo!
Maybe extended warranty coverage if you're considering sale. (08 328i has 175K and no issues

2013 f30 335i n55
Purchased 36,000miles
Dme flashed at around 46,000 miles
Xhp Trans flashed around 75,000 miles
No extended warranty
Car now has close to 100,000 miles

Only issue was valve cover gasket
No need for extended warranty

I'm gonna need to do some major maintenance on it soon, bushings, trans fluid, coil packs, etc

Get the BMW ESC

If anyone is debating between the BMW-managed Extended Service Contract (ESC) and a 3rd-party warranty, I highly recommend the former for the same reasons Steve Lehto explains in his video. My F31 is on the CPO ESC and I can say for certain claims are a breeze compared to my other car on a 3rd-party warranty.

That said, if you're going to buy BMW ESC and get your money's worth out of it you need to do some leg work. Waiting around till your car throws a CEL or strands you on the side of the road isn't going do it. If you do it right, the ESC will pay for itself twice over.

3rd party warranty companies exist for the sole purpose of making money. They don't make money by paying out on claims, so they avoid it whenever they can.

What do you mean “if you do it right” I’m not certain how one can go about gaming the ESC to get best value out of it.

Also - even the all bells and whistles one that I have doesn’t cover nearly as much as people think. So far I feel it’s been a waste of money.

So…I’m very keen to learn how I can game the coverage, recoup $4k on repairs, and make my car more reliable!!!
