What To Do
I’m stuck in a bit of a dilemma. My PCP is due to end in a few months. Do I keep my car? I still love the car, looks good, quick enough, estate practicality, good size, has had no reliability issues, decent enough on fuel, fantastic condition and it’s a manual.
However, the other car I keep looking at is a used F10 M5. They are supposed to be pretty reliable, not have extortionate running costs and a 2014 model can be had for around £30k. So it would be worse on fuel, higher maintenance costs/tax and less practical for a car where you can very rarely use all the power. I’m also not an auto box fan, however the videos I’ve seen on the M5 make it seem decent. I keep thinking the M5 would just be a waste on my low annual mileage of around 8000. But I still want one. I would also have to get one of these as I have a dog: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Viewing-Wat...03143109&psc=1 I think I need to have a drive of one. However, that means going to a dealer and pretending that I want to buy their used car, as obviously they don’t have any new ones to test drive. This in itself is a ball ache. What to do. Maybe I should just block Autotrader on my computer. Has anybody gone from a 335i to an M5?

Forget the F10. Wait for a G30 to fall into your price band.

I wouldn't down play potential running costs - they can be eye watering if anything goes wrong and servicing costs are a big step up too... To go in with eyes open, I would get a quote for extended warranty - I would not recommend getting one without this... If you are happy with the price of that then scratch the itch I say

I'd be clear on potential running costs. I switched from a 335d to a S4. Not exactly a big change but the S4 wants quicker oil services, expensive services in general, chews through tyres at a much faster rate - all adds up. And that's an S4 which is basically 35/40i type performance but with 4WD.
I'd suggest the M5 is gonna cost plenty in up-keep and you need to be ready for that, or for something that seems like so much fun theoretically then becomes more of a concern than a joy to own. And I say this with my own feelings in mind now that I am looking at C63/ Giulia Quad/ M4 as next step. Sounds bloody excellent in my heart! Less so in my head when I think about the £££s |

Brakes and tyres will be bloody expensive! But if you are doing 8K a year that shouldnt bother you too much, providing brakes and tyres are good when you buy it.
Overall, you definitely need to test drive one so see if its for you. Bigger, heavier car and no grip unless its bone dry. Would be a fun car though and pretty much nothing will touch it once its on the move

Yeah it's the brakes that seem to be a big cost.
Anyway, I took a CP one for a drive yesterday afternoon. Nice car, quick - although it felt really big, definitely felt more of a cruiser. The CP version was also really loud on cold startup, not sure the neighbours would appreciate this as I do quite a few early starts. So I think I've decided to keep mine for now - until something else catches my eye 😁 |

A mate owned an M6 with the same engine for 2 years, AUC so had warranty and bartered in an extra year so it was essentially covered for anything... except a stone hitting the radiator. £1,000 from BMW fitted. Injectors went on one bank, that was £1,500 under warranty. Tyres were about £300 for each rear and brakes weren't cheap.
If you can stomach that, then go for it but I would strongly recommend the BMW warranty if you're not buying AUC! |
