According to BMW they build the turbos to have some wastegate play as soon as engine is off or just turning on (cold). Lot's of owners complained about it and even with a turbo swap, it was good for less than 1K and rattle returned. Now, if you have wastegate play and rattle when you rev the engine after it is fully warmed up than that is an issue. You can always manually adjust the arm a full turn or half a turn in to take the slack out and make the turbo last longer if tight on cash. But you will need a new turbo sooner than later.

Why would he need a new turbo and not just a new wastegate assembly.

Please explain.

There is no reason to swap entire Turbo assembly for a waste-gate rattle. You would swap the waste gate first.

Don't believe me everything you read on the internet!

Pretty sure over-tightening the actuator arm will also call up an engine light from what the dealer told me.

(In my case) the dealer said actuator couldn't be replaced without the entire turbo so they replaced my turbo on warranty.

The wastegate is not actually rattling it is the flapper that is on the inside of the turbo hot (Downpipe) side that is flapping around. This is due to the machined bushing that the arm sits on and moves back and forth. You are required to press fit that bushing/sleeve out if you want to remove or replace the entire flapper arm which requires a turbo removal! Now you can probably have the turbo refreshed and rebuilt by the shop for around $300-400. But since you already have it all off, might as well upgrade to the MHI or Another turbo.... But your call. Personally I would not go with a OEM replacement. I would get it rebuilt, as the shop will put a bushing and arm that is made of better quality and will probably not rattle like the OEM ones do in a few K. BUT OP is under warranty. Go complain to dealership and get BMWNA involved and have them send their tech down to the dealership and do not pick your car up till your turbo is replaced!

Should not matter though. It still got actuator arm and valve itself. I too have electric actuator and got some rattling. But when I try to move the valve axle by hand I feel only very little play in it. So I'm not sure if it's this problem. I would say it's fine and something else is rattling. Do you feel any play on your wastegate axle if trying to move it by hand? Only try with cold engine of course.

Would this be considered excessive play?
