New 3 series.

Just called into Rybrook Wolverhampton to look at the new 3 series after they called to say they had one to view.

Very nice car....but £44k is a bit much for a 330i.

Went last weekend for the launch and they had a 320d m sport with some packages on and it was £46,500. Outside was a 15 month m3 for the same money.

Baited the salesman a bit and basically told no discount! I was still laughing 3 hours later.

I'm just amazed that they think a base price of £40k is a reasonable starting point. Was thinking about the m340i for my 340i but god knows what that will come out as.

I would agree with that New car prices have rocketed over the last few years or so.

I initially went to my local dealer several months ago, before the car was launched, and asked for a discount.
They laughed at me.

Pricing is a complete joke. Public just need to vote with their feet don't buy. They will soon be at 20% discount

The real joke is they depreciate like a stone so your PCP or cash buy is funding an asset that drops in value like a stone!!

Far better options in the second hand market some great cars around

Pre Brexit list price for an M Sport 320d with metallic paint and NO packages or options is £38,980
I know that no one pays list (unless they're unhinged) but that's a lot of pennies for a basic 2 litre diesel saloon
20% + discounts must be just around the corner, I'd imagine - otherwise they won't sell any!!?

You should laugh back. There will be discounts available from day 1, just like there was on the 5 series, or they won't sell any.

This is a mass market small saloon, not some high end sports car or SUV.

Just realised what that horrible grill looks like.

The extended fat outside of it looks like a woman who's applied lipstick over the edges of her lips to make them look artificially bigger. Looks terrible on a car too.

We've got used to a different and 'cheap' buying experience with BMW.

As an example, go back to the launch of the E36 3-series in 1991, you'd have a different picture of how much a BMW cost. With inflation we'd be paying the equivalent of more than £40,000 (for a base 320i SE), for less of a car, options like metallic paint and stereos were extras. Never mind leather and much of the stuff we have as standard today. Add in the fact there were no discounts, bank rate was over 10% and inflation at almost 6%.

Only thing in our favour back then, residuals held up a bit better, due to the cars being more exclusive.

The black grilles do have a "trout pout" *, totally wrong proportions in black and make the car look cheap and tacky.

When I see them on the road in the future, with black grilles, my first thought will be "no taste".

* "Trout pout"; unnaturally swollen lips resulting from the injection of excessive collagen into the lips in a cosmetic procedure intended to enhance their appearance.

They are indeed having a laugh with those starting prices. Why would anyone pay that much when you can get into a 5 for the same price after discounts?

As others have said, the prices will soon come down...especially when the Brexit bollocks gets extended and everyone holds on to their money even longer and watches and waits to see what happens.

My first new BMW was a 316i in 1982. Took 6 months from ordering to delivery. Henna red. Cost c £5000. No discount. Traded it for a new 320i after 2 years and only lost around 25% of value. Bought about 50 new ones since then but no more. New BMW's have become a highly discounted volume game and I now prefer to put my money elsewhere. Things like the 1M I will keep

I think that's kind of where things are heading again...

But I suspect that we are not heading back to this, in any way of compensation...

I just cant bring myself to hand over that kind of cash for a marginally different car than i was driving 10 years ago.

Relative to what other things cost these cars have lost the plot. Standard kit is higher than ever but the price has increased by the options value which used to be optional. They have never depreciated as much as they do now either so its a double whammy of cost.

Will be picking up barely used models for half the cost within 12 months at this rate

Tosspots Take no notice mate

Suspect they won't be laughing so much in 6 months when coast to coast et al start ramping up the pressure.

I do agree with zerofx on this point.. 46k does seem a bit much for a 2 litre petrol
