New key...how do I get it to work??

I have a 2016 340i...one of the keys wasn't working when I purchased CPO, so they said they'd order me a new key. It came in the mail today but anyone know how to get it to sync with the car?

So there is no confusion, this only works with a new virgin key ordered specifically for your VIN as the OP did.

This DOES NOT WORK for used keys already programmed to another VIN.

People on forum call their recently purchased car "new" as its new to them.

In the future, people will read this and think they can purchase a used key off eBay or Craigslist and its this easy.

It's not.

I've ordered a new blank key, but did not give my vin.

Will this method still work?

if it did work, crooks everywhere would be buying blank keys and stealing cars much easier.

order the key with your vin so it's programmed to your car, you don't need the blade cut if you don't use it (I think some people buy it this way to try and install remote starts).

I’m surprised no one has mentioned this. If the dealer ordered a key for you, they will program it for you. Otherwise it’s almost worthless.

I bought a fob key for my F30 335i thru eEuroparts.com and saved a few dollars as compared to dealer. It works fine.

When you order with the VIN, you get the actual key engrave/cut for the manual key hole but you still have to program it...like in the video posted. It's done like that so no one can buy a new key from dealer to get in on your car( remember movie GONE IN 60 SEC). you need the car to program the key. If you bought a key with NO VIN then its blank key.... get it

+1. Even if someone has a blank key they can't program it to the car without an existing key. The point of getting a blank key is that a used key that hasn't been wiped can't be programmed to a different car.
