I live in MN and plasti-dipped my Honda wheels back when I was in college. If you do it right, it's very robust. I never had an issue with salt, rock chips, or anything. The longer you leave it on, the harder it is to get off. I'd do it yearly if you have the time.
They held up to all my wheel cleaners and even a brush. It's not as fragile as people make it to be. Don't ever do the whole car though, that's garbage. When you're broke in college or just don't want to buy a new set, it gets the job done.
