I hear they suffer from timing chain issues like the previous e90s

Also a loud ticky engine.

The 6pots of this generation have been pretty trouble free in comparison. Touch wood.

They're direct injections, which generally sound like a diesel

the 320 is just a de-tuned 328. Very minor mechanical differences. I would liken it to when intel released a pentium 66 and a pentium 60, with the latter intentionally made slower, and priced cheaper, simply for market presence.

I recall a private article where a BMW engineer explains the differences. He emphasised on the fact, that whilst similar, the 2 engines are significantly different mechanically. Different coating on the cylinders, different head, etc. 20i being cheaper to manufacturer. Thus appreciable differences beyond software, even if not fundamental.

You can get more options for less money with the 320 and a mild tune can put you near 335 territory. Put an exhaust and some exterior mods like wheels and lowering it and you have a pretty sweet ride for maybe $15k or so, but looking like more than $40k if you debadged it.

While we're on the topic of 320's, after an ots stage 2 tune do you think a larger exhaust would actually increase hp or generally be better functionally?

Definitely echoing what others have mentioned but I'd avoid getting a 320, especially considering you seem pretty knowledgeable about cars. Sure it's a fine car, but the lack of power is noticeable.

Coming from my own experience, I have a 328i and I'm constantly looking for ways to increase power. 328/330 are fine stock (significant more power than 320), but once it's YOURS you're going to want to keep pushing it and unfortunately there's only so much you can push a 320. At least with a 328/330 you can realistically get to 310 HP without too much capital. Just my $.02

320's do not have all the same options as 328i.
For the money you are going to spend to get to 335 territory, its silly not so start there.

Yeah 335's are pretty cheap these days, but if you really want to be cheap, throw a JB4 on the 320 for some decent gains and not a lot of money, or maybe a JB+ for like $199, it will also work on the 335. You can probably get anywhere from 50 to 100HP gains just with that.

I would just settle for a 335i/340i. coming from a 328i i wouldnt want a 320i. 335i/340i has more options and has a better resale value imo

Any updates on this thread. That being said, I have driven the 320i, 328i and I own an M2, so I figured the 335 would be a lot like that. I didn't feel the 320i was lacking power at all for daily driving duties or highway passing. I had to get a 428i because you can't get a 420i in the USA. I love the x28i cars as they have plenty of go with good fuel economy.

sure you can get a 320i and mod it for more power but than one day you will think I should have gotten the 340/440 and slapped a tune on it and than even more power.
Buy the most expensive/performance oriented car that your budget can handle without straining.
