Am I the only one here that mines?

Crypto currency is like marijuana. Why pay for it if you can make it?

I tried mining Bitcoin on my AMD R9 270x, obviously nowhere near quick enough these days, and it only has 2Gb so couldn't do ethereum.

Not as yet. Wanted to see what happens with some virtual investments. Probably a good idea if you've no idea what you are doing!?

But now of course, I wish I'd have put some cash in! But no idea how long to leave a trade running. Do you draw on it when it's giving a good return, or leave it and how it goes up even more?

How do you even learn about this stuff?!
There's no rift or wrong answer to those questions unless you can tell the future!

You dont need rigs full of top end graphics cards to mine an acceptable amount.

Believe it or not CPU mining can still be profitable.

Don't get me wrong, I have GPU rigs and ASIC machines set up and they earn me a tidy sum, but I also have 20 bullshit desktops in the office all running I5 CPU's with no dedicated GPU's which bring me in the best part of £150 a month.

Nicehash.

And no before someone gets in there. It's not something I smoke (because we all know UK hash is shit) it's just a coincidence.

Dont like looking at the prices at the moment, I had to take all my cash out of ETH and BTC earlier in the year, still made 25% but would have made a lot more if i'd kept it. I bought ETH at $80!!

Still got some EOS, IOTA, XPR and will just leave them and see what happens.

It's all about access to "free" electricity, there's no point mining at home unless you've got solar panels or a wind farm in your back garden. I was reading an article the other day that calculated the power currently used mining bitcoin could have also powered a country like Morocco.

I have been looking at this and are stop losses on the original investment amount or do they include the growth?

You can set it as low as you want.

When I first started doing it I didn't set the SL low enough and the price hit the SL and automatically sold it at a loss.

If you buy at say 460 ETH and have the SL set at 450, if the price drops to 450 the trade will close and you loose £10. Same from TP if you set to 470 and the price hits 470 it will close the deal and you make $10.

The problem with these is the price can jump all over the place and you don't want to get caught on the SL if the price is go to drop and then rocket back up.

With ETH I ended up setting the SL at $50 so I had big margin.

Back in the summer ETH crashed on some exchanges down to about $1 and that caused a shit storm back it triggered thousands SLs, a lot of people lost a lot of money, and that was all trigger by one person/group selling a massive about in one go.

On the flip side one guy had set and order up to buy at $1 and bought a few thousand at $1, within an hour the price had gone backup to $300+ and he made a fortune.

I get what a SL is but the question is does the SL work on the original investment

E.g

I buy at 350 with a stoploss of 10 the price rises to 450 so I think great I am making money. Then much like the crazy fluctuation the price drops does SL trigger at 440 (10 below current price) or at 340 (10 below my original purchase price)

Thanks

The SL stays where you put it. The SL is set as a market price not the difference between the investment price and the current price.

It works on whatever price you set it at! What you described is a trailing stop loss which will maintain the differential as the price rises. So you can choose either type of SL.

Would only risk what I would be willing to lose. Just wanted to understand how it worked
