Gummy Interior Door Handles

Hi all.

I have a 2016 435i F33 Convertible.

The interior door handles are gummy and sticky and constantly look blackish dirty. The color is cream. I have used rubbing alcohol to clean these and they still remain gummy and sticky, though temporarily clean.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to rectify this with a more permanent solution, aside from replacing the interior handles?

Replacing them is the best option. There are quite a few sources. Google it.

Mine just started getting gummy too. Ordered these, in black. I also plan on upgrading the ambient lighting LEDs to something brighter while I'm in there.

I've had the linked replacement handles on my car for about a year now. They have a satisfying "soft touch" feel. Fitment is great and they're still in perfect condition.

I will definitely take a look at these. I appreciate the feedback.

I appreciate the link. I was originally thinking that I would try to lacquer coat them or something, but these options seem much better. I am perplexed at how they get soft and gummy in the first place.

Mine are eight years old, not a bit gummy. It's been suggested that oils in our skin might attack the material.

Do you have any close up pictures? The ones I ordered come in tomorrow and would like to compare the two, as I'd like the soft touch as well.

Mine are 8 years old as well, although they've only been in my possession for the last 2. They were fine up until a month or so ago. I don't have long nails at all, but I managed to take a chunk out getting out the other day with my thumb.

Mine is 8 years old as well. I have had the car for a year and seldom drive it, but it did have this issue since I first got it. I thought maybe being a convertible out in the open sun might have caused it. It can get clean with rubbing alcohol, but still stays sticky and gummy.

Thanks! Appreciate the pictures. Will add pictures of the ones I ordered when they arrive today. Curious if they're the same texture.

It’s heat that does it, as owners are finding out over the past 45 days. You do not have that issue in New Hampshire. Not only affects the inner door handles but the rubber in other areas such as climate control and radio.

Hi guys
I actually thought they were welded into the doorcard, but they are fairly easy to replace or?

My inner door handles were welded in. Just take a drill to it with same diameter drill bit and it should break loose. That's what I did.

The rubber on mine was like soft tar getting all over my hands. I waited too long to replace them.

I believe its a combination of heat (Florida), skin oil and dirt, and any chemicals you try to use to clean it. Mine became very sticky and coming off after about years here in FL. Replaced with a set from Kies that feel much the same without any issues.

I see everyone have that problem, but i don't have! My car stands on sun, rain.... black color, black leather interrior, but handles are like new. I wash my car once in 10-15 days, i am cleaning interrior with fx protect or koch chemie stuff. Two microfiber cloths, spray interrior cleaner and wipe. Never had sticky or rubbery handles. My car is now 197.000 km, i bought it with 165.000 km a year ago.

lol, you didn't buy it from new, so you are not the first owner, so you can't claim that you don't have that problem as you only own it 16% of its lifetime.

previous owner may have just replace it and you don't know

But i drive that car daily, enter my car few times a day, in tuxedo or jeans or working farmers, clean hands or oily hands.... i know when something is dirty. Handles become sticky after few days! Just proper and regular cleaning is solution. I have friend with E90, he was replacing his handles twice in this year. Buty he is mechanic and daily his car with greasy and oily car and does not clean it that often.

Just got around installing the inner handles. Pretty straightforward, just took my time drilling out the plastic rivets. One thing I did notice is that the driver's side is missing(?) the top boss for the upper most compression clip.

Haven't finished putting everything back together yet but I'm happy so far.
