I was going over my options for adding an additional USB port in lieu of using the snap-in adapter in my center console.

After some deliberation I decided I didn't want to mess with removing the snap-in from console, nor pulling my head unit out again because it's kind of a pita to situate the Bimmertech backup camera module and LCI ac trim bezel mod wiring.

I found an inexpensive iPhone 4/4s Media snap-in adapter from a member here with the intention of just using a 30-pin dock extender for my 160gb iPod Classic. Well that just sucked, it took up more room in the console and wasn't a permanent solution. What I decided was to disassemble that snap-in and modify it to hold my iPod.

The disassembly was rather straight forward, 4 screws on the bottom + two clips. Once I separated the two halves I disconnected the ribbon cable on the 30-pin plug, then removed the screw holding down the board. The next step was removing the two springs which slide the bottom "Media" piece so that now it just stays retracted.

The next step was trimming the snap-in so that the iPod's wider body would fit. I first had to remove that "Media" piece which was just held on by to metal posts, I just bent them straight and removed it. I then used my trusty Dremel and trimmed the sides and bottom a little bit at a time until the iPod fit. Once it fit I put the snap-in back together.

I decided to keep the built in fan function to help cool the iPod so I had to come up with a way to keep pressure on the top of the iPod so the fan would engage. The best solution I could come up with for now is a Velcro strap wrapped around the iPod and snap-in.

Installed the adapter in my console and fired it up, works like a champ! I can even play movies/video through it with my CIC head unit.

Just thought I'd share.

This is amazing. Does it still work? I had thought only iPod Touches worked. Cool to see a Classic do it, too. Do the movies have to be in MP4?
