Can I get/send text messages?

I just got a brand new 2016 340i xDrive. I got most of the options except the "Driver Assistance Plus" and "Enhanced USB" options. Can my car get/send text messages on the nav system? If so how do I set it up?

I have an iPhone 6s. I read in an older thread that you have to have banner style alerts set up on the phone for it to work, is that true? Do they have to be the ones that show a preview of the text message on the lock screen? (I don't like that so I have it turned off)

I can get and reply to texts from my Apple watch if I have to, but it's hard (and a bit dangerous) to do while driving. I mainly just want to send a quick notes back like "on my way" or "be there in a minute" so my wife doesn't keep bugging me while I'm driving. (she gets impatient when I don't reply quickly) I don't really need to compose messages so a short list of canned replies would be sufficient.

Check to see if you have "Office" as a main menu option. If so, you can configure your phone to send text messages to the car. If that menu item isn't there, you can't. The other way to check is if, after pairing your phone, on your iPhone, go to >settings>Bluetooth, then, to the right of BMWxxxxx, click the little "i" in the circle. If you see an option for "show notifications", turn it on. If that option is absent, your car cannot receive texts. Either way, if you have Nav, you can always do a long press of the voice activation button on the steering wheel to activate Siri. Then, just ask her/him to send or read your texts.

Do you need the "enhanced USB" option to get Office? I didn't get that because I didn't know what it was. Any way to have it added after the fact?

Yes, you need EBT but it can be coded very easily if you have ProNav (Big Screen)

I do have ProNav. I just didn't get the EBT option because there was no explanation as to what it actually did. Had I known it was required for this feature I would have just paid for it.

That being said I bought one of those coding cables so I'm going to try to code this myself.
