Carbon Fiber side fins (Update)
UPDATE: 04/21/19 It's been some time since I have been active on the forums. I grew bore of my e90 and just slowly started spending less and less time on the forums. I apologize to some that I never responded or took an eternity to respond. Just wanted to give you all a small update. I recently got a f36 435i, so I immediately got back on the forums to try and learn more about this platform. Starting to think about what I can do with my car. I began to mess around with the idea of making a poor mans varis diffuser or about 1/4 of a varis diffuser. Had some free time this weekend so I made a mock up. Still really early and I'm sure i'll make a few iterations before I'm happy with the design. I had a few spare fins in different sizes so I decided to give it a shot. Not sure if it's going to work but this is the stage I am at right now. If all goes well I'm going to make one for myself and I'll definitely have some extra room if anyone wants a set of side fins. I'll keep you guys posted. Thanks. Paypal: moeguti@gmail.com Last edited by vvroom; 04-21-2019 at 02:48 PM.. |

I love these on my E91. I think they actually look even better on an F30, though.

///WORK-F36 was nice enough to set up a meet with me so i can dial all the necessary dimensions needed. I'm not a believer in a one size fits all. I will be making sure each fin is made for each series. |

Alright guys, I will be going ahead with ordering the material for 10 sets of fins. While I wait for the material to arrive I'll be designing and making sure all these are perfect before I set up all the laser cut files. I'll be sharing the progress with you all. Guessing by late next week i'll be ready to get them all cut. Early next week i'll post my paypal info, so i'll begin sending them out as you pay. Feel free to ask any questions. Thanks

Im not here to block the biz, but some questions should be asked such as how long these will last? how thin is that carbon slate and also whats the coating on it ie; resin, how many coats of clear and so on. My experience with those carbon slates is that they last about 4-6 months before turning color due to the clear that is on it. When the slate gets laser cut the edges will not have any clear coat on it making it easier for the clear to possibly peel or thread. If the slate does get high quality clearcoat on it and even the edges, I think they can last over 2 years with no prob. Not trying to hate but as a member of this forum I can contribute some knowledge.

About 6 months back I noticed my friend had some plastic fins on a his car. I asked him where he had purchased them and he told me they were on the bumper when he purchased it. He was cool enough to actually give them to me, so i could try and make a set of my own. Fast forward about a month, I met some pretty cool dudes at a biweekly meeting in Orange County. I figured I would ask them if they might be interested in some since i had plans to make a set anyways. The pictures above are from their cars. I never advertised them on here, nor did I ever plan to make more. Had just made them for friends and that was all. Some of the guys took pictures and posted them on their build threads. People began to ask them where they can get a set, so I decided if there was enough interest I'd be happy to make some more. Do I have any qualifications to make these? Probably not. This was my first time making any car parts. What I do have are 2 degrees in architecture, so I do have a design background and love creating new things. I'm not making these for any monetary gains. Only thing I get out of this is a pissed off daughter that the small free time I get i'm working on these. That is why if I go forward in making these, it will be the last time I do. This is getting way to long. Again appreciate the post man, and if you guys are still interested in me making them great. If not, great. Last edited by vvroom; 05-05-2016 at 10:33 AM.. |
