F30 Towbar / Trailer Hitch wiring retrofit

Hi all,

A while back I was intending to retrofit an electric swiveling tow hitch to my F30 330d. Plans changed because the actual hitch that I purchased was internally ruined (gears stripped) so it went back for a refund.

Over a year later and the need to tow something has popped up again so I picked up a used Thule/Brink detachable towbar in good condition for £80, which I'm happy with.

The towbar didn't come with a bypass relay or anything, just a short length of loom from both the 7 and 13 pin sockets.

Back when I was planning on retrofitting the electric swiveling towbar, I purchased this tow module: 71606872319

I purchased that one because of two reasons:
1) RealOEM listed it as the correct part number when retrofitting the electric swiveling tow bar.

2) newTIS (RIP ) listed that module as the one that included the control system and socket for the electric swiveling unit.

Now, I'm not trying to fit the electric swiviling unit, just a standard detachable one...

Does anyone know if 71606872319 is still applicable for my new application?

I'd like to go down an OEM route so that I can achieve OEM towing features like the Trailer Hitch Reverse Camera mode, auto PDC deactivation, etc..

P.S I realise I might need to end up changing my 13 pin socket that came with the towbar, as the BMW official ones have a microswitch in them as far as I can remember.

First off I just want to ascertain if the 71606872319 module will work for what I want or not

Any help would be great.
Thanks

I want to follow this too. I bought the OEM Towbar and OEM Harness. My car already has this option 8SL Preparation For Trailer Tow Hitch. Now BMW is saying I need a Control Unit, but for the life of me I can't seem to see where that ECU will connect to my vehicle at all. It will definitely plug into the Hardness because the harness fits into it, but from the Harness it does not connect to my vehicle at all.

I'm hoping someone has the instructions on here on how to get this done without me spending that extra moola to take it to BMW to get it done. They quoted me on Labour and Parts and I bought the parts from another BMW Branch at 22% discount. Now when I installed the parts, seems there are parts missing.

Apologies for the hijack, but this could possible assist others as well. Items I purchased + the item they still want me to purchase.

HI all

Have another update. I finally got it all installed, after almost updating all my modules in E-SYS and realizing after doing 3 modules I need to stop cause I don't have a spare power source for the car.

Because mine was a retrofit Removable Towbar (Not the automatic/Electronic) I had to code HO instead of VO. This I would never have thought if I didn't have a low battery on my laptop and started searching more on how to get rid of the errors on my dash.

Add HO:K235 (Not VO, remove VO if you did). This is only if you got the warning on your dash after injecting the correct files as well. Warning indicates Towbar is connected. Be aware of braking (or something to the sounds of this). Link to info https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1827537

Thanx again. This forums really helped me as I would never have found that.

Hi, wanted to know what modules do I need to code the HO:K235 to?

I've done AAG and hooked up my bicycle rack. The lights on the rack were all on but I didn't get any notifications that it was connected nor was PDC deactivated for rear.I have now also coded REM (for pdc deactivate) and will be testing tomorrow. So before I go on are there any other modules I need to code or only those 2?

I also checked ISTA+ for faults and could see trailer light warnings. Could the bike rack not be interacting correctly with the tow bar harness?

Code the REM, FEM, ICM, DSC, Kombi and HU.
And if you have a rear view camera and you want to have the zoom to the coupling you still have to code the value MACRO_TRAILER_COUPLING in the HU.

And that worked 100%. Once I coded it I had to change my customizations again cause it seems to set it all to default. My vehicle now disables rear pdc autocally and haven't check the camera settings yet (I did code that as well).

Thanx for all the assistance.
