Not sure if I have linked this 400k miles thread before on the E90 forum, but looks like you are catching up! https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1787346

They tend to shit on the F30/N20 and think it wouldn't last as long, but you are proving them wrong. Any chance you can provide a list of maintenance/repairs and at what mileage they were performed? It would be very insightful.

I'll do my best to dethrone those E90 guys (aka N20 haters).

I will say that my Indy once told me I should write BMW and show them my mileage and they'd probably send me a plaque (ooh goodie).

Will work on a list of service and try to get it up here....

hello,

so I'm thinking about getting my f30 back on the road, it would be my backup car. I would want to be going the used engine option, what is the optimal year I should be looking at?

2012 335i, I can use any of the n55s right? So should I only be looking for a later year model (2014, 2015)?

I briefly had a 2013 x1 35i with the N55. Had it for about 33k miles and only issue I had was the CP that the dealer replaced under warranty. Not sure if the rod bearing issues on 2013’s are as bad as the 2011’s so I’ll let others chime in as my N55 experience is very limited.

My understanding is that the rod bearing change coincides with the change from PWG to EWG. So the PWGs have the older rod bearings that are more prone to issues and the EWGs have the S55 rod bearings.

I am not sure the complexity of swapping a EWG into a PWG and what all would need to be change, if it would require a new DME in addition to hardware changes, etc.

So that change from PWG to EWG was for MY 2014 I would assume as I thought I read that before on here?

2014+ are definitely EWG, i believe some 2013 can be either and it would depend on build date. I just know when ordering DPs that's what they have said and request vin to ensure fitment, since PWG to EWG changed the turbo outlet size.

Consider Trans fluid change but no real consenus on this. Many others have changed shocks/struts at this point but not vital. I'm sure you'll get many replies on the TC issue, but I think it's overblown, just me. Leave it alone.

Drive and enjoy!

I just hit 150k on my 13 f30 328i. No major issues only thing I’ve changed so far is the water pump valve cover and thermostat. Changing the timing chain this weekend and servicing the transmission.

Congrats! Some items worth addressing - spark plugs, drive belt and tensioner, thrust arms, cabin and engine air filters.

My late 2012 F31 320d is at 119k miles at the moment. It had timing chains and some engine seals replaced shortly before I bought it so I hope it won't give me problems any time soon. I have only done regular maintenance and changed front brake pads. So far so good.

Spark plugs should be changed if they haven’t been. Very easy DIY’er job. Drive belt/tensioner/pulley from FCP Euro for around $60 is a great deal.

After hitting about 90k on my 2013 f30 335i I’ve had nothing but problems. I’m very good with maintenance as well, oil changes every 5k miles, transmission oil change done, spark plugs, coils, injectors. Had to replace the fuel tank because it cracked somehow, some coolant valve issue where the car’s temp wouldn’t go up, now the car is leaking oil and it turned out to be the vacuum pump. Car doesn’t drive as smooth as it used to either, rough boggy cold starts. Parting it out and selling soon

Great thread will also serve as my introduction. Hello, my name is Ryan and I am a Bimmer’holic. Drove an E30 for many, many years before buying my F30.

106,000 miles on my 2013 335i M Sport. It has a 06/13 build date which was the final build of the PWG cars. I bought it with somewhere around 68k in a private sale out of Atlanta. No service records so unknown what had been done by PO. Leaked oil from the start so assumed typical leaks had never been fixed. I’m an automotive technician by trade so I’ve done all the repairs/service myself. I replaced the interior front door pulls and valve cover within the first 10-15k. Shortly thereafter the charge air pipe blew apart on a hard pull after sitting in traffic for an accident. Replaced that with a VRSF unit. The OEM shocks and struts left much to be desired at 95k. They were tossed in favor of a set of Bilstein B16 which was a dramatic and profound improvement over the OEM.

More recently I’ve resealed the oil filter housing and replaced the thermostat outlet hose adapter with a billet ECS piece. Oil had soaked the serpentine belt so I replaced that and the idler and tensioner at the same time. Just the slightest bit of play in the idler but the tensioner was tight enough that I kept it as a spare. When I did the OFH, I also pulled the intake and Seafoam soaked and scrubbed the intake valves. The valves were not carboned enough to justify a walnut blast. Oil pan reseal is next as it is leaking. That job as a little more involved so I’ve been putting it off as any typical mechanic would of his own vehicle.

Just for fun I’ve replaced the intercooler with a VRSF 5.5 and installed a MST turbo inlet pipe. The car came with the BMS cold air intake. Working on a tune and downpipe as we speak.

Only cosmetic/aero I’ve done to it so far is a Turner high kick carbon spoiler.

Crossed over the 200k mile plateau the other day. Still have my new 02 sensors sitting around to be installed as I had a code come up recently but drives/shifts fine.
