The heat retention is supposed to make the turbo spool faster (when placed on the Hotside),but to be honest I never noticed the difference; However, I did notice intercooler seemed to heat soak less and the engine bay was noticeably cooler, specially during the summer time or spirited driving.

I am in Austin and happy to help if you need someone local or they want to see it in the vehicle.

Thanks! Awilki is going there tomorrow, if he cannot make it or we need some help test fitting - we will let ya know. They will keep the spare turbo awilki has for the time so if they would need somebody we will be in touch as you're closer .

Not yet. They mentioned install on N54 was not that easy - they did them basically when changing downpipe or turbo. However, B58 is much easier to work on and the turbo is nicely tucked to the side and wisible. I would think you can do it from the top or maybe have your DP removed to get there.

So in short, I dont know yet, but it should not be very difficult like it would be on N54 or N55 engines.

This. The N54/55 turbo is in a much more difficult location. Ours would most likely only need to remove airbox and possibly heat shield directly over turbo. 20 min job.

Also in for group buy. Typically it has buttons to snap it snug around the turbo. Removing the downpipe would just give me an excuse to wrap that too.

Was thinking about wrap of DP too - but read / saw some pretty bad experiences given condensation. Advantage of turbo blanket is that it can still breathe, while wrapped DP will keep the moisture. In all honesty some people swear by that, some curse it. So I decided to try having it rather ceramic coated which does best of both worlds.

I'm feeling a little reckless so I'm going to do it anyway

I agree with you. I had my downpipe ceramic coated for ~$60. Much better solution than trying to wrap it. See attached before/after photos.

I highly recommend Bonehead Performance outside of Philadelphia who did the ceramic coating of my downpipe and also the black powder coating on my bright aluminum front strut brace (also ~$60) to better match my stock engine bay (but they can do hundreds of colors) See photo.

If you are purchasing a new component like a downpipe like I was. It's pretty easy to have the retailer ship it directly to Bonehead Performance. Bonehead can ceramic coat or powder coat, then ship it to you in the original packaging. BP is a second generation family business with excellent quality, reasonable prices and excellent customer service.

Add me to the group buy. I have an ER catless dp with ceramic coat and so far after 15k miles, the coating still looks good with no flaking or chipping. The coating definitely helps with a cooler engine bay. I know after running the car hard that I can put my hand on my downpipe within 20 minutes.

Is it a different type of ceramic coating than the type of ceramic coatings that are used on exterior paint? Do you also know the durability of the coating?

They are two different types of ceramic coatings. The one that you are thinking of is a car paint sealer. For an exhaust system they use a special high heat coating that protects the metal from heat. It actually helps the heat propel and continue through the downpipe and out through the exhaust system.

+1, you can check one of renowned suppliers of this here - they also have a very nice FAQ section where they explain things. But what johnung wrote, its different from car ceramic coating and is used to keep heat inside the components, cool your bay and other components, reduce IATs and increase temperature of the exhaust gases which means they will be moving faster - which means better scavenging, theoretically better performance.

It also provides anti-corrosion protection unlike wrapping which does in theory the opposite. And it also lasts longer - wrapping is 2-4 year thing and then you have to re-do it. Coating should last longer.

Personally, i dont like wrap or blankets, Ceramic coating done right is the right way to go on turbos.

My main issue with turbo blankets is should you have a oil seal fail on the turbo trying to put out the fire on a oil soaked blanket is much much harder. I guess with drip trays you still have an area for the oil to collect but yeh where you might spot the oil running down the turbo/exhaust and see/smell the oil leak and catch it before it lights, with wrapping a turbo you allow the oil to collect, saturate and then light.... go's up much much quicker and you dont stop the fueling of the fire by shutting off the car as the oil is already there to burn!
