I'm in Montreal and RWD isnt available to us. xDrive only.
Our winters are worse than Toronto/Vancouver seeing as you won't move if you only have great winter tires on a rwd car. That being said, you still need winter tires and AWD for the best traction over here. |

When I decided I wanted a 335i I tested two of them.
1- '12 335i Sport 6MT RWD 2- '13 335i Msport Auto AWD I really though that I wanted a 6MT RWD, but I really didn't like the suspension being not EDC, the skiny steering wheel and the loss of boost between shifts. The Msport with EDC and leaking front shocks had a much better handling. The car can take corners much faster than my E60 sport RWD sport suspension (M5 sway) ever did. I live in the snow belt but I never needed AWD, good snow tires and driving skills are more than enough even in deep snow, I did get stuck if my driveway (uphill) is pure ice, my ex to be wife never had a problem with the X3. But I see the AWD as a backpack, it is handy sometimes but I don't need to carry one everyday. So why did I buy one? Well, it was cheap. and nowadays a cheap Msport is rare so I bought it. I can adapt my driving around the AWD. If I had the choice between the two at the same price, I would absolutely get a RWD. More fun to drive, better handling, easier to throttle steer, easier to work on, and you can get more front camber easier. A better track car. You want sporty: Get RWD You want everyday / scare of snow or wet: Get AWD You want drag racing: Get AWD

But snow tires can save your bacon on ice and all season tires are not good at anything, just a compromise for all situations. But I agree that you receive some nasty weather, I always dreaded doing the drive from TO to MTR when I was in sales. The Hwy turns to ice and you don't know until you see cars in the ditch.

If you think this is bad, hop over to the maintenance section and search for threads debating what oil viscosity is best.

I got the RWD after always having an xdrive. I wanted RWD for a host of reasons but better fuel economy and different wheel options were not worth the loss in traction and control on wet roads, standing water, and heavy snow.

plus points for xdrive
Traction Predictably in wet and snow Traffic light fun Hoot on a damp/wet trackday Good for towing 1.8t, and better on a blow out experience for me Almost even tyre wear for me ..and the negative The diffs, xfer case and transmission oil change cost over £1000 at indy .. every 70k mikes or so Unrepairable tyre puncture could mean upto 4 new tyres if diff >2mm Feedback and feel is not as good as RWD Extra weight Worse fuel consumption than RWD |

What is the actual mileage difference between xDrive and non-xDrive?
My last road trip netted 6.2l/100km (38 USMPG) over a 3 hour trip (elevation dropped 500' and then into rolling hills), and 7.2l/100km (33 USMPG) on the reverse of that trip. Both directions was 120kph/75MPH. I was nothing less than impressed considering it had BM3 Stage 2, DP, etc. Just curious what the real losses are since the car does push all power to the rear wheels during non-slip situations. It would technically just be the drag from the front diff. |

Depends what I'm doing in 335d: 33mpg for towing, 52mpg on the flat at an indicated 75mph. Usually around 45mpg.
better if I try ... |

I looked for half a year for a 340xi with < 10k miles with 6 speed and finally found one. Picked it up 2 weeks ago and it's been awesome. I'm coming from a 2005 S4. Although the tech is older, "Quattro" is marketed as some mystical system, but the AWD system on the 340xi feels a lot more sporty with a more noticeable rear bias. I'm absolutely loving it so far.

I also pondered the same question, in the end I went with the xDrive, but part of the choice was also to get a touring so things likes snowboards fit in it better, touring + xDrive just seemed like a good choice.
I do love it overall, with good tires it feels very glued to the ground.Slightly more fule consumption vs a normal one and slightly higher turn radius. |
