Can you use wheels without TPMS
2016 340i
So I have 2nd set of wheels for summer, can I run them without TPMS sensors? Does the car care (other than report a not sensing the pressure sensors?) thanks |

I run my summer wheels without TPMS sensors. Car doesn't care, allows sport mode, DSC off etc. Only thing you have to deal with is dismissing the notification every time you start the car and the light on the dash.

What rjdnyy224 said. Everything works perfectly fine. It is annoying with the warning though, kind of regret I didn't put sensors in my summer tires.
Wish BMW would allow a setting to disable the monitor.

Interesting, I had read in another thread that the car would do the same as when your tire pressure is slow. Last time that happened to me it wouldn't let me out of comfort or let me over 80 mph.

The only thing that happens without TPMS is a warning light in the dash that comes on a few seconds after you start driving, and never goes away. EDIT: It's not the same warning as when your pressure is low, it explicitly states that it's unable to connect to the TPMS system.

My summer setup doesn't have the sensors. The notification every time you turn on the car though starts to get annoying after a while... I really don't feel like spending $140 or so to get the tires dismounted/mounted and road forced balanced again.

Exactly, same here. It's a bit of a nuisance, but not enough to make me spend whatever and go through the process of getting them installed.

My 2015 won't let me go into sport mode when the pressure is reading low. Its happened more than once.
I wonder if I could go into sport mode if the sensors were missing entirely? |

Great news, I also thought from reading the forums that the car will not go into Sport mode if the sensors are missing. I ran my WRX without TPMS for 3 years on various aftermarket wheel setups, the TPMS light on the cluster didn't bother me.

As I said above it works just fine. Here in Norway where everyone needs separate tires for winter and summer it's very common to have aftermarket wheels without TPMS during summer.

Schrader EZ Sensors should be able to be programmed to any car - as long as whoever is installing has the tool to do so.

On another note re TPMS. The law has been reinforced recently in that if you want new tires mounted on rims, no shop will do it without the senors. From 2 places I called anyway. |
