With the number of rock chips and windshield chips I've had from rocks flying into my car, I am truly surprised that this does not happen more frequently.

Minor jidders apr 2020, car at 105,000 kms. Al fluids replaced. Seemed OK. March 2021 jidders came with a vengeance with gear changes. Intermittent at times or not at all (there but much quicker) in sport. Checked TC with an independent master mechanic. He thought TC/trans. Checked with BMW SC
For second opinion, they also disconnected TC. Issue persists. Sure enough they say transmission, 17,000$ CAD.12k part alone. Will take it back to master mechanic for options. I think weeks of -45C cold affected it 2016-2017. |

New clutch around 65k, wasn't necessary (upgrade after power mods) but heat spots indicated it had about 10k miles left on it, that runs you about 2k. DME needed to be replaced at 80k due to a short circuit, that ran me 4k so far. Most of the time large repairs are caused by improper care and general negligence.

Preventative timing chain and oil pump drive chain replacement, after I started to hear a light whine. All in about $3500 CAD parts and labour.

I haven't had mine long enough to matter, but $40 to replace a faulty radiator cap and the coolant to top it off with.

Kind of off-topic but seems like a relevant thread to ask. Does anyone know what happens if your car just totally breaks? Like for example, someone mentioned here that they needed a new engine. What would happen if you're out of warranty and just simply can't afford to pay it? Is your car worth anything? Does insurance hand you a check for what they think it's worth? What is the protocol? And I'm hoping a part-out isn't the only way to recoup your money lol

Perhaps that explains why I get these extended warranty calls several times/wk!

But just say, your average mid level 3 Series spun a bearing or something like that. Most cost effective option is to source a used replacement engine. It looks like they can be found for under $3k, but I'm no expert and that was based off of a 30 second google search. Insurance won't cover a replacement engine due to mechanical failure (i.e., a spun bearing). If the replacement cost is too much then the most you would get out of it is what you can recoup in parting out.

I've got 70,000 miles on my 2014 328i.
Zero problems. Zero dollars spent outside of normal maintenance. I've been out of warranty for 3 years and I don't even think about it. I do, however, get calls all time wanting to sell me an extended warranty. |

You don't get those calls because they lose money on those policies. I still get calls and letters for my 2007 that I haven't owned since 2015.

Consumer Reports advises to skip the extended warranty for EVERYTHING
