When dealers not all but some, get a used car in , and it comes with 2 keys they often turn one in for a 50 to 100 dollar credit.A friend that was a salesman told me this.....Brand new car they have to give u 2 sets, but used they don't, unless u put up a stink...My 320i came with 2 sets used....that was one of the 1st things i asked before signing on the dotted line...

Would like to avoid stealership route..
Finally, I was able to find a small autoshop in Toronto, Canada and get a 2nd key fob (key cut, programming for Comfort access) for my 2011 528i for $250 cash. PM me for shop details if needed.

Dealer charging 500 cad for FOB plus 200 cad for programming at Autohaus in Toronto. Will try an independent shop.

It was under $400 USD for a key cut to my car with comfort access.
I synched it to my car in a few seconds. Don’t pay for that.

How much? I'm guessing it will work with a 2014 320i

Also, will this work? https://www.autopartsapi.com/eEuropa...re-revised.pdf

Or it has to be wiped out first? If so, how do you do that?

My local dealer (Calgary, Canada) quoted nearly $1000 CAD for a comfort access fob (May 2019).

But did you buy it new or used or CPO? I can understand dealer only giving you what they have if it is NOT a new car. If it is a NEW car (actually now that I think of it, even it was a CPO car), I would go back to the dealer and DEMAND a second key.

Bump key fob issues

I bought a pre-owned 2015 328d wagon. It came with two keys (keyfobs). Obviously worked as I drove the car away, happy.

Finally, wife (who never drives my car) but kept the other keyfob, just in case, determined her key wasn't working. As I had the remote battery alert, I assumed both needed batteries and replaced both of them.

Mine worked, hers didn't. Closer examination showed that the second key (removed from the fob) didn't match the one that worked. Dealer (not a BMW dealership) said it was my problem.

Called BMW dealership and got a new key cut - just the key, not the fob was $54. Ok. But once back in the FOB, I couldn't get it to sync up with the car. I've watched every YouTube conceivable and can't get it to work. Does the fob by itself have a memory?

I would have thought with the new BMW-cut key (which works to unlock the door) would have established control over the fob.

Anyone got any ideas? If I wasn't nearly 300 miles from nearest BMW dealership, I'd go there...

The mechanical key and electronic key have no direct relationship. The fob works whether or not the mechanical key is in the fob. The fact that the 2nd mechanical key didn't match and the fob didn't work indicates it was the wrong fob all along.

I bought my 2014 328i from a used car lot. I only received a fob that didn't work. It would only start car when held to the steering column. I went to erhard BMW dealer and they charged me 316.00 for FOB and mechanical key and programed it to my car.

I have the exact same issue (maybe) with my 2016 328i xDrive. My second key will not work - I have not tried the cut key yet, nor have I replaced the battery in this one (no indicators that it needs a new battery). I called the used car dealer I purchased from (four hours away from me; they had numerous similar BMW's), and they said just keep the other key whether it works or not (they did not want it back). I assume my second key is from one of the other cars on their lot (not getting any ideas on another really inexpensive BMW...).

In the event replacing the battery does not work (and neither does the cut key), can my second key be re-programmed to work on my car? And is that something I can do, or does it have to go to a dealer/indy?

I don't care about CA (or having a cut key that works), like the OP I would just like to have a second key for emergencies.

You don't care that if the fob battery dies, you don't have a mechanical key that will allow you to get into the car? Isn't that the more likely "emergency"?

True! My advice is still try to contact your area representatives, this is the better way to have your spare key. Cheers!

Good point - I was thinking more that, if I lost my one key that works, I would have another that would unlock and start the car (electronically),

Ideally, I would have two keys that would work electronically AND mechanically, but since I already have a second key FOB, I thought it would be easier to possibly "program" it to work with my car electronically, even if the mechanical key didn't work.
