Why the hell does BMW not have this???

Stay with me on this..

1) You get in your car and start a journey, the car knows your current milleage as its shown on the odemeter - right?
2) You arrive at your destination, your car knos your new mileage, how much fuel you have used, your MPG, avg speed, your mileage etc - its all on your trip computer - yes?
3) On the way home, you fill up - and your car knows how many litres you put in - all it does not know is how much you paid - correct?
4) And your car is connected to the internet via its crummy 2D card - you agree??

So why is not all that wonderful data sent to a database in the BMW cloud and presented as nice stats on the BMW connectd Drive web site with history of drives, mpg over time, fill ups, etc?

Instead, we get crappy useless apps like the panaramo thing and have to use Fulley.

ConnectedDrive my left nut!

Because it would prove published economy figures are bollocks...

Porsche PCM3 does offer this feature as an exportable log for business mileage purposes.

Matt, the same reason why I would want this - somebody just showed me their web page for their Jag which does this - very nice. It was their month end, so doing expense claims, and there was all their trips listed. It even allowed regular destinations to be 'named' so they had all their customers plugged in, and listed them in a table - trip to A, trip to B, with their milage, they they ticked the ones they were interested in, put in their milage rate, and downloaded it as an expense report.

Very sweet.

Didn't know any car brand did this! I thought BMW were at the cutting edge of car tech!

Wouldn't they have a much higher insurance excess to replace, considering how much the screens cost?

Well that's one way of looking at it. I was more thinking they're great at clearing the windscreen in winter mornings Wifes mini has one and they're really good, standard on Mondeos too. Some kind of patent issue I think for BMW.

On topic agree on the App front, should be much better.

Even though this is a situation...

I had a heated front windscreen in my very first Ford Modeo... it had really thin wires in the glass, you pushed a button and it warmed the glass. It was fairly effective, but it came with a warning note not to use when glass was covered in frost, ice or snow as it put extreme pressure on the glass which woul dlead to failure.

It was hand for demisting.

Maybe because hardly anyone cares about such things? I fill it up and go and I'm sure 99% of people do the same

That and the data flow would be immense.

The first update would be initial switch on and then constantly as you drove, then a major update as it would have to recognise a delta to previous amount.

So the database would require.

Speed
Fuel tank contents
Distance reading

It would need these say every minute.

Alternatively, Every time the car stopped (auto stop on or off) it would need to provide an update for the same.

There would need to be at a minimum a user macro to run against each individual's database - by VIN.

Multiply this by total number of BMW ( and other makes).

Then look at servers required, the actual software (oracle, IBM ) then the daily reorgs, run stats and back ups)

Yes it is doable however the costs V the need ?

A few years ago I was involved in vehicles supplying data via GPRS / 3G, the setup for that was complicated and expensive.

I don't see the need for regular updates? It could simply upload a single "trip data" every time you pushed the start stop button, I.e. End of journey, or even only upload when you lock the car. Internal HDD can cache everything in the middle, upload at end of journey would only be a few kb? Containing distance, time, fuel used etc...

This would really appeal to the group that love cricket stats! and data for the sake of data, not for me I'm afraid to say.

Yeah but you would have it updating with the ignition off, not the best method.
Also the shear act of supporting that type of database purely for fuel stats.

Admittedly, they will have cars that do this looking at life monitoring.

Unless it has two way confirmation, any data would be fire and forget and easy to loose say your 40 mile @ 50mph bit.

That and actual driving profile would need recorded, sport, Eco etc, gear driven in.....

For the effort involved, feck it, just look at how much cash I am putting in per month v miles drove in what type of conditions / terrain.
