N47 Rattle Noise - Passenger footwell
Hi All,
Ive got an issue with my N47 engine worried its the timing chain??? Basically there is a rattle noise which cant be heard on the outside or with your head under the bonnet. When you put your head near the passenger footwell (not internal sound i.e glove box) you can hear it clearly. Its not the standard woosh sound the timing chains make (referring to all of youtube videos). Having said that it is predominant upto 2000rpm and very quiet at idle. After 2000RPM the engine and turbo take over and its faint but still there? The noise is literally like marbles in a jar being shaken. Any suggestions? Link Below: https://youtu.be/uSK95eKicWU |

How many miles and how old is your car? A lot of vibrations/rattle noises come from the airbox, the engine mounts, or the plastic engine cover. From the video it does sound like chain to me but then again you can't hear it from the engine bay?

It’s a 320d msport 62 plate with 105k on the clock.
I’ve listened to a lot of faulty chains and they generally have the woosh type sound. As anybody heard a different sound when the chain is slack? I’ve also read that the noise is prodominately heard from the drivers side wheel arch where as this is heard from inside the car in the passenger footwell. I really hope this isn’t the dreaded chain, I’ve only had the car for 3 months! |

It does sound a bit like the chain, but hard to tell from that video. With a bad chain it kind of has a rhythmic lopey scratchy sound like a film projector that is out of film and still spinning. (At least that's my inetrpretation)
This clip is a bit of a milder case, but still clearly audible from the engine compartment... I would think if it's quiet at idle from the it's probably something else, unless you're just picking up on it early on. You could try removing the engine cover to see if that has any effect. Nowhere else in the world is the number plate system used. Isn't that based on first registration anyways? I was looking for the month and year from the sticker on the door jamb.
BMW had a few revisions of the engine in Europe, based on production date. Do you know the oil change intervals done on the car?
