Alpina D3

There is a significant price premium for the Alpina D3 over the closest equivalent F3/1. Whilst I have never driven one the suspension is said to be very well sorted unlike the various criticisms of the F3/1 especially in x drive form. Does anyone have a detailed knowledge of what is different on the Alpina suspension-wise?

Thanks, I have read that and whilst it is quite detailed do you really think they use stock dampers?

I wouldnt be surprised if that is the case. Most likely BMW hardware with BMW software.

On E90 Alpina, the dampers were indeed standard BMW parts.

Sounds like Sytner dealer BS Dealers will tell you anything to sell you a car!

Looking at the B3 parts catalogue, nearly all suspension components (dampers, ARB, bump stops) are standard BMW. They are all listed as standard BMW part numbers which are fitted to various 1/2/3/4 series.

Only exception for the springs which appear to be unique to Alpina. Im assuming the damper SW is Alpina specific too.

Gone are the days where Alpina used to properly engineer there magic on BMW's. Today they are merely tuners, shame.

You can see why no-one buys Alpina's. Just put ACS springs on your F3x ..... its all Alpina seem to be doing then? (albeit their own springs).

The Autocar review of the B3S mentions all of the Alpina specific changes to the suspension as mentioned by R330dx except the dampers.

I was going off the official Alpina parts catalogue for the B3.

Havnt had the wheels off her as yet but had a little look around underneath for any hints, theres a small Bilstein sticker on the damper suggests there perhaps not quite oe bmw adaptive , and can see eibach logo on the springs.

Alpina changes to stock BMWs are extensive. If subtle. They even change the springs on the seats to match the revised suspension.

Springs are probably Eibach as there unique to Alpina.

And again, according the the official Alpina parts catalog the dampers are series BMW. They have series BMW part numbers which is the same as SE models.

I highly doubt the parts catalog will be wrong.

Bilstein could be the supplier of the OE damper for all F30's?

as the D3 is presumably based on a 335d xDrive then if the suspension were left largely unmodified it would be on SE spec suspension? Seems unlikely. Has anyone driven a D3? How did it feel? How does it compare to ACS springs setup?

The D3 is actually based on the 330d luxury and not the 335d

Indeed, which is why it is RWD.

Although you can get the tourer in both RWD and 4WD. But the saloon only comes in RWD.
