Hi Everyone,

Brief History: My Name is Matias, just bought a 2016 BMW 318d Manual with 56000 km (35000 Miles) on it. Went together with the seller to an official BMW service here in Ljubljana, Slovenia, had the car for a general check up, everything in order, nothing unexpected, car has been serviced as planned on BMW services, record was clean. So I decided to go for it.

The Issue:
After parking it level, through a cold night (34-35 F) with the hand brake on I start the car (release the hand brake, obviously), put in reverse, start backing up while turning... "Clunk" it is an audible noise, and I somehow "feel" it in the steering wheel. Continue backing up... "clunk" it hapens after a turn or two of the wheels.
The noise completely disappears after driving for a while. I repeated the scenario in different points to my commute, it disappears fairly quickly, I would say.

Second morning... same issue. Same result, after driving to work, I park, try to recreate it... nothing, smooth. Even after hours parked outside during the day, no issue. It seems to be happening after being parked overnight (low temp related?). The car is parked under a roof, but not in a heated garage.

Should I worry? I WILL call both seller AND the official BMW service where I got it checked. But I always rather inform myself and know what to expect / ask, and be on the look out for any BS (you never know)

This is a commonly reported problem on the BMW f series for those who live in cold climates, some people suggest it's the struts that clunk when loaded and cold, check out this thread it.

Had a similar issue that turned out to be a failed u-joint at the driveshaft. 2014 328d F30

Is that an issue you can drive around with? I mean, without any life threatening or major damage danger to the car? at least until I have it more thoroughly checked next week?

By the way... parked last night without the handbrake. No noise whatsoever, nothing...

maybe the handbrake pad shoe is loose or worn? Try engaging your hand brake, and put the car between drive/reverse with it still engaged and your foot off the brake, will help pinpoint the issue.

I have a manual one. So reverse with the hand brake on and slowly let go of clutch?

yes do the same thing, keep handbrake on, put it in reverse/drive (dont release clutch all the way obviously haha)
