Actually the insulating material is not expensive at all, but it takes lots of work.

You have to remove all the parts in front of the firewall to approach and replace that insulating material. And that's why I thought BMW should be responsible for that defect material application.

So, I would like to ask BMW to replace that part, under warranty or goodwill service. I think you might contact BMW to ask for the service.

Even my 10+ y/o ford dose not smell that bad !!

How can BMW treat their customer like this?
That issue bothered me and my family for a long time, and now seems there is nothing to do with their company?

Congratulations !

I think that's insulating material defect, and BMW made up the mistakes.

SO, I've tried everything in the book to fix it and I've finally found something that has made a major difference.

The dealership sells these odor freshener canisters that when you depress the button it releases the gas for ~2 minutes.

The instructions said to open the windows after 2 minutes to let it air out for 5 minutes... but I just kept everything closed for a couple of hours. Also I kept the air on recirculate at 84 degrees for about 5 minutes.

It's day 3 and I haven't smelled the crayons yet. The canister was $15 at my dealership, and I mean... even if this isnt a permanent fix... I'm fine spending $15 every six months or year if that means I got rid of the crayons.

I just found there's also other brands on amazon for a bit cheaper, so I may try those... but for now, the dealership one worked great! (it has a spearmint scent)

Give it a shot if you've got $15 to blow!
Crayon smell??? I'm considering a 2020 440 convertible, I don't want a $70,000 car that smells like crayons!

Does any one got this issue fixed after replaced 51487221965? Maybe they have changed material and solved this issue under table?

My 2012 F30 has this problem...the smelling is getting worse day by day...

What's funny is that I thought the smell came from the leather, and here I am feeling like a loser for not having a crayon smell because I ordered sensatec.

Enough that I strongly considered putting a box of crayons in theE46it when I got it.

I would definitely run an ozone generator to get as much smell out while you are at it!

Thanks for the suggestion. Actually I’ve tried that before, I have quite strong one with 10000mg/h, and clean almost every weekend. And also put a lots of carbon and two external air filter to absorb smelling. It doesn’t improved the smelling obviously , because after driving a few minutes the crayon smelling come up again, guess the heat from engine would speed up that bad smelling. So this time I decided to replace it all.

Hanz and Franz say its special formula “ NEW CAR SMELL “
Would you prefer “OLD CAR SMELL” ?? Perhaps a dirty gym sock in front of your cabin air intake. I can sell you that mod for $299, extra sock included.

Just kidding.

Cosmoline sounds like the cause....its amazingly durable stuff. Any gun owner will tell you that. It keeps guns “ like new “ for over 50 years in a crate.

I just scheduled a visit to the dealer to among other stuff to verify possible cause for oil smell in the cabin. Condition exists since they replaced the cover gasket one year ago.
I think I have oil smell, not the crayon, but at this point I'm not sure... I suggested to remove splash plate and verify for any oil puddle left... Car has no oil leak, level keeps the same between oil changes.

Probably will be better, since it is the owner doing that.

I just bought a 2014 328i (54,000m) and mine smells like BO, (body odor) I was thinking maybe the previous one owner had pets (it was a repo so no way to ask) but since I'm not sure what the 'crayon smell' is exactly maybe it is just that.
It's pretty strong, and the car was seemingly deep cleaned.
Good to know it's not me imagining it! :-)
I'll try having the carpets steamed and clean all the leather, then try the car bomb, hopefully it'll help a little.
Thanks for the tips, and if anyone has any more recent ones, would love to hear them as well.
