I have an email open to Hartge as well on this. They asked for the VIN in order to check if the injectors and exhaust temperature system of their European version is compatible.

I also called Dinan, but they told me that the diesels are not something on their product road map.

I heard back from Hartge and this is the content of the response:

Quote:
We got it!

A new part number will and price will come shortly.

Car feels so much powerfull with the upgrade, pulls strong, feels lighter
and fresh. We are very satisfied with the result.

Here is the info how it works:

The Hartge ECU is an external additional control unit with a wiring harness.

It is internally sealed and cannot be detected by BMW service procedure interrogations.

It is also not possible that BMW software updates can disturb the performance of the Hartge ECU.
Unlike engine management "chipping" and "flash" upgrades, it never gets overwritten during
service enhancements by BMW.

The Hartge ECU is connected via a special wiring harness to the 4 injectors, exhaust temperature sensor
(all plug and play), and power supplies.

Additional power is generated by increasing the injection timing by a precisely calculated number.
This number depending on engine speed and calculated engine load and other parameters
like injeciton timing.

The BMW ECU continues to monitor all other important engine parameters as standard.

Therefore the engine behaves as standard to ensure that the standard emissions controls
remain intact for the standard emissions tests and drive cycle testing.

In extreme temperature conditions, the Hartge ECU also monitors the exhaust gas temperature,
and if this exceeds the safe limit the Hartge ECU reduces power accordingly back
to standard BMW power.

All standard BMW engine protection and emissions systems remain in place and continue to function.

If you have any further questions please contact us.

Sincerely

Joerg

Initial response looks like they (Hartge) are suggesting improvements to:
158 kW (215 hp) / 4000 rpm
450 Nm (lb-ft 332) / 1850 rpm

for ~$1500, which is about 1/3 the cost of AC Schnitzer's, this sounds pretty nice. I understand that the AC Schnitzer solution comes with a warranty, but...

Companies like AC and Hartge have a lot more overhead than Racechips. It's just like in my F10 market Switzer or Dinan and BMS. At the end of the day we get the same results, but pay a lot less and I am all up for supporting local small business.
I have used BMS and Racechips for years and never had a single complain.
BTW, my buddy's site is having a special on RC 328d Ultimate tunes.

Kevinmac thank you for posting your experience!!! I had posted another thread about tunes on the 328d, someone directed me to this thread. I was looking at Race Chips but wasn't sure if anyone had used them before. I wanted something that would maximize the performance on the car without going too crazy. I was looking at their pricing but dang almost $700 for the RaceChip CR Ultimate tune!!! So I looked around a bit more and found this company that sells Race Chips for $499 that's $200 off http://dtmhaus.net/rachulsp32.html , I placed my order this morning.

Next order of business is springs

Now that you've had the Racechip for a while ... how's the MPG looking with that extra HP and Torque?

Lurking the forums, I cannot find anyone with a 328d that has pulled the trigger on any company's tune. Does anyone have any first hand experience tuning the 328d?

I started a thread asking about RaceChip several months ago, then gravitated towards Kelleners Sport's tuning modules and now I'm back to considering RaceChip. I just read the above thread on the X5 forum which brought up two questions for me:

1) What is involved in programming the ECU to accept the piggyback? How is it done? I don't have a Smartphone app or anything like that.

2) Does anyone know if RaceChip R&D develops specific piggyback modules for specific engines (like the N47d20 NA version) or do they go with a more generic tune that applies to a range of diesel engines? I will certainly ask them about that, but just curious if anyone knows.

Just pulled the trigger on this for my 2014 328d wagon.

Hopefully the car doesn't blow up.

The car only has 1,000 miles on it.. you think it's OK to install this early in cars life?

Looks like this dude just installed his and is pretty happy. Hopefully he gives a better review as he racks up the miles on it. Install doesn't look too bad.

This is all he says...

I took it out for a quick drive and noticed immediately that the acceleration was quicker and smoother, gone was the flat spot coming off the line, no error codes.

How long does it take to rack up another 200 miles? It probably won't matter either way but why tempt fate?

Oh I agree.. I'll wait until I have about 2,000 miles on her which will take week or so.

I just didn't know if I should wait until 10,000 miles for whatever reason. Don't want to harm her.

A piggyback is still a piggyback, either way you look at it, and I'm satisfied with the way racechip has it tuned, but like I said, I don't plan on staying like this forever, hence the route I'm going.
I would rather have someone tune it on a dyno with their own custom maps, like my buddy is doing with his wrx at Cobb. I will try to talk to them next month when he visits them and see if they can do something custom for me, I'm praying:/
I'm still interested on your review with KS though, I'm sure you enjoy it, the 328d def begs out of the stock tune )
I've given up on the KS tuning module because of a post (#40 on this thread) that reproduced a letter from a tech adviser at AC Schnitzer. Schnitzer and KS use the same hardware, just programmed differently. This tech adviser said that they had been unable to test their module on the NA version of the N47d20 and the injectors used between the 320d and the 328d were different he couldn't guarantee there wouldn't be a problem. I sent this Schnitzer note to my contact at KS and the KS guy told me the same thing. That was enough to steer me away, so now I'm back in RaceChip territory. I will be writing RC to ask if they've tested theirs on a 328d and not just a 320d from Europe.
