KW SC coils spring

So after continuously looking for the cause of a horrible sound at my front end suspension, I finally find what was causing the sound. Ill be reaching out to KW soon.

What was the sound like? From picture, it's difficult to tell what the root cause may be.

its pretty clear from the picture that the bottom coils are binding together as the yellow paint is missing. Metal fatigue would be likely the issue. I can already imagine it will sound like metal clunking and binding together.

It's always good to ask first. :-). Thanks for providing more details.

How low is the vehicle? Are they used or you purchased brand new? Do you know whether preload adjusted?

How do you preload the springs on these KW coilovers?

You are correct, I forgot these are unibody coilovers.

Please keep us posted! I would love to hear what the cause is and resolution. I just ordered these for my F31 sports Wagon.

All operator error. I adjusted the height incorrectly, jamming, stripping and then cross-threading the spring perch. Resulted in the spring compressing unevenly (metal binding sound).

Cost me $80 in new perches and 2 days shipping. But the time learning BMWs suspension dynamics, taking it apart, and replacing the perches was priceless.

Take away: the max and min height isnt determined by the threads on the strut but the manufacturer 🤪

For a while, I was chasing something loose; sounded like knocking. Then I checked for over-tighening of components. I actually found it by mistake. I always jacked the car to troubleshoot, obviously causing spring to decompress.

I decided to bounce on car, while in my drive way, and then heard the metal binding sound. When I shinned my flashlight pass fender, boom, the problem was looking right at me 😫

Seeing this way after the fact obviously but I immediately caught that the collar was way too far up the body in comparison to my V2's which are set to the "maximum". Live and learn, $80 mistake really isn't huge in the scheme of things, hopefully now you get to enjoy your KWs!
