Car park accident

So little drama today! I parked my car at a costa coffee car park I revered into a bay where there is also a bay behind me all fine. The space next to me was unoccupied as was the bay behind that. As I have gone to get out of my car a suv decided to drive through the bay behind me to the right to cut across the car park resulting in my car door hitting the passenger side door of his car.

No damage done to my car but a nasty dent and scratch to his, the older gentleman got out of his car and his introduction was ‘what the f*** are you doing’ my response was getting out of my car as it was clear that no one was trying to get into the bay next to me.

Pointing out the damage then telling me he was going to leave it if ‘ I didn’t get Leary’ he walked off pointing at his car and muttering to his wife.

I didn’t get all shouty as I was with a client at the time and didn’t want to come across as not professional. Told the guy I’ll be in costa if he wanted my details.

Unsure what to do, i took down his reg just in case but don’t know wether to call the insurance and advise or just leave it. He didn’t ask for my details and I stayed in costa for around 2 hours.

Any advise??

I wouldn't tell the insurance in case they log it as a non fault claim with no damage and it effects your premium.

Even if you don't claim its going to be recorded somewhere, its still an accident

50 / 50 knowing insurers. I'd just forget about it currently, seems the chap realised it was his bad driving & is probably blaming his wife anyways.

Daughter has just passed her test and was told you should never drive through a car parking space. You have to treat the solid white lines as do not cross.

The other driver would therefore be at fault.

And yes I would inform the insurance company. I would also be suggesting you tried to exchange details and he refused (isnt that another offence).

If you don't and the other then claims how does that make you look for not informing your insurance?
Just make it clear what happened and that at this time the person that drove in to you left the scene with out asking for your details after you offered etc...

I think you did the right thing, keep his details but I suspect that his Mrs told him it was his fault and he was being a Tw*T and to just get going.

At the end of the day he has left the scene of an accident and he is the one out of pocket so I would just sit tight and not stress about it.

Thanks for all the comments, I’m worried about informing the insurance even if there is no claim against me as it would more than likely push my premium up come renewal time 😑 has certainly stressed me out!

Maybe he didn't want to talk insurance because he wasn't insured.

I would not inform them if there was no damage to my car, if he then makes a claim I would say I wasn't aware that his car was damaged and he did not give me his details.

If you say you have had an accident then it's straight on your record and you have to declare it for the next 5 years.

The thing is.... you were not driving!
You were stationary, ignition off, and simply getting out of your car. Totally his fault, and you often see these clowns cutting across supermarket car parks, rather than use the designated lanes. Pure laziness.
If anything, would logging it with your local police force, explaining that this clown almost took you are your door out, then just walked off, mean you were covered, without the insurance company seizing an opportunity to increase your policy amount?

Just forget about it...the insurance company would put your insurance up next year if you tell them......

I had a guy leave a T junction to turn right infront of me so I pulled up to the white line. He then changed his mind and decided to turn left so stopped in the middle of the road then reversed in to me lol. He had a very nice looking VW Transporter with the perfect shape of a LandRover bumper right across his back door overiders and all lol. No damage to me we got out and he said sorry and drove off no problem I never heard a thing.

Think I may log it with the police, not a bad shout.

Don’t think I’m going to call my insurance provider, there is no damage to my car. If I get a call from them I’ll deal with it then.

Appreciate all the advice! Really wound me up today especially due to my shit start to the day with issues at work...

You may be surprised. Look at how many Lamborghini's have been towed in London due to no insurance.

I think you are doing the right thing in not informing your insurance company. I informed mine after someone hit the rear of my wife's car. It's a long story, but we didn't bother to claim in the end, however as it was logged and changed to "information only" it was still classed as a claim! So now I have to remember to list it every time I renew. I wish I just continued with claim now.

I think the Police suggestion is the best route, if they are interested of course.

At least you received no damage to your car.

+1 with tell the Police. They should at least give you a crime number which you can give to your insurers if anything kicks off.

People driving willy nilly across supermarket car parks is a real bug bear of mine. I always think it's an accident waiting to happen, particularly at the speed a lot of people go at.

I had a near miss a few years ago, it was only because I was going slowly that an accident was avoided.

They wouldn't be, but by informing them and getting a crime number, which insurance companies like, you potentially put yourself in a better position should anything happen.

You wont be getting a crime number, police wont be interested as no government property was damaged and no one was hurt.

Agreed I doubt they would want it listed as it only increases the number of unsolved crimes. Makes them look bad.

I had similar thing happen. Defiantly don’t tell the insurance company, as they want any excuse to log it... then prob put up your insurance next time. If he does try to claim its too late, he didn't take down details as you requested and drove off after hitting you, wont have a leg to stand on, i doubt he’s gonna do anything.
