New TV set up issues
Hi, all, got a 4K Toshiba tv in May and after countless hours spent trying to set it up I'm still not happy with the picture quality. We also upgraded to Sky Q and even movies in 4K don't look much better than standard Blu rays. My main concerns are when the picture is dark, the black seems to "move" in a sense, not a sold block of colour. Any suggestions on how I can improve it?
Thanks in advance. Mick |

Well happy with my sony af8. Blacks are black and watching 4k nature programs is something special.

Definitely sounds like a resolution or refresh rate issue.
I think I know what you mean from your description, as I have some films on a media pc that are not fantastic resolution and that does the same (although there's nothing I can do to improve it, as it's the file itself, not the TV.) Presume you've checked all the sky box output settings? |

The picture looks "grainy", certainly worse than my 6 year old LG. Picture resolution is set on Q book to 2160p 10 bit so not sure what else I can do? Just watching Vera on ITV 3 HD (don't judge me!!) and some shots look like a Lowry painting or it was rendered on an etch-a-sketch!

Its not on an eco/ energy saver type sensor mode is it? If so turn it off.
Also turn off any motion settings. Almost always make the picture worse. As Russ says, check Q box is set to 2160p. There might also be a HDMI setting on your TV to allow 4k.

Just seen the picture is showing as 50hz, 3840x2160p, HDMI sockets are shown as enhanced. Mode is set to dynamic, contrast 100, brightness 50, sharpness 55, colour 70, energy saving off. Dynamic contrast is high, noise reduction off, colour temp normal, HDMI full range on. No matter what I do picture seems very "contrasty".

What about on a different source? Does the iPlayer app on your TV have the 4K beta option for the Wimbledon tennis? If not compare iPlayer picture with BBC on Sky and also BBC on digital terrestrial.
I'd turn off dynamic personally. Usually creates too much colour and contrast. There's likely to be a normal or standard setting. Cinema setting generally the most accurate out of the box. I'd also double check in the advanced settings somewhere that all picture processing is turned off.

This is for a different model but may apply or help:
https://www.avforums.com/threads/tos...-help.2174172/ It might also be worth updating to the latest firmware if you have not already. |

Seems ok for a budget tv with lots of picture controls but reviews suggest toshiba black handling is very mediocre on similar sets (not sure of diff between 4353 and 6863):
“The reason for this is that the 50L4353's black level response isn't particularly hot, leaving dark pictures and dark parts of pictures looking rather greyed over – a greyness which inevitably infiltrates the appearance of whatever colours are appearing in those dark scenes or areas. The 50L4353's difficulties with delivering a believable black colour have a further knock-on effect, too. For it's noticeable that there isn't much shadow detail to be seen, leaving dark scenes feeling frustratingly shallow and hollow – not ideal if you're after a TV for watching films on. Yet another problem with dark scenes on the 50L4353 is that the TV has a pretty limited viewing angle you can watch from before contrast starts to look uneven or reduced.” If it’s similar on your model i’d suggest it’s probably worth getting a Blu-ray picture setup disc and working through that to get it as good as poss.... |

Funnily enough I've got a setup disc but for some reason I cannot access the tv setup menu when I'm on the surround sound system screen. I'm beginning to think it may be faulty, I decided to wipe all the settings and install it again from scratch, selected first time installation and now the power light is cycling between red and green, can't do anything with it. Think I need to get in touch with Curry's.

This is a non-technical response, but if the contrast is set at 100 and there is too much contrast on the picture, why not drop it to 70 or something like that?
I spend hours fiddling with my picture on new TV's and my rough plan is to start out with some live football/cricket and look at the colour the grass. I try to get the grass looking like (guess what) grass colour. |

So, sitrep, managed to get it back to factory settings so going to start again. Watching Angels and Demons on Sky, looks ok but needs tweaking further, will give all suggestions a go, many thanks everyone.

I find ITV picture very compressed - for calibration is best to use a BR or even HD calibration disc would do. Netflix+Amazon also compress the video but they have some shows in HDR which are far better than anything Sky Q can currently show - use those if you can...
With regards to settings, my top advise is to change the main picture mode to something called "cinema" or "movie" - this basic change should fix a lot of skin tone and motion issues. You can turn on motion controls when watching sports but best to leave that off otherwise. Finally, a really good guide which I hope you find useful: www.avforums.com/PicturePerfect Very good community over there too. |

Sorry to it OP but Toshiba are off my list forever. At the same time we got the LG OLED we got a cheap 50 Tosh 4K.
I'm not going to be a dick and compare the picture quality. Totally unfair at 5x the price. However the general interface and WiFi of the Toahiba is actually a joke.

Funnily enough our last tv was an LG one, picture is much better than the Toshiba one. Curry's have advised me to call there helpline, will have a go tomorrow and see what happens. Tried to update firmware, says there isn't one available....
