Annoying tapping/ticking from wheels - no stone stuck

Hi all,

OK its summer and I like having the windows open.

However, I have a really annoying tapping/ticking from the wheels on the left hand side (passenger side UK) of the car.

I have checked the tyres to make sure there are no stone's stuck in the tread or nails etc....

I know its coming from the wheels/tyres as the tapping increases with speed and then decreases with speed.

New brake discs and pads on the car about 4k miles ago - so don't know if could be related to that, as didn't have windows open in British spring ha ha.

Anything I am missing as to what may be the culprit?

Cheers

Ha ha, oh yes, sounds like exactly the same thing.......pity you handed the car back, I guess I'll soldier on to find a cause/solution.

Next step I guess is jack the car up and 'spin' the wheels to see if anything is catching in the brakes.

Hope it turns out to be something simple as kind of ruins driving with windows open at anything below 30mph

Had this constantly, tightened the wheels then stopped for a while.

Reappeared not long after but during turning or hard braking..

Doing my head in at the moment!

I have the same as well. F33 435d x drive. Stock suspension. I always thought/hoped it is the brake sensor touching the disk. I am very curious to find out what is wrong. I don't have the space to lift up the car myself now but I might do next weekend.

Please keep us updated. It seems like it is a common thing.

I found that for me it starts when I take a right turn and it keeps going when I go straight. When I turn left it stops for a bit and then it starts again. Also, only when it is hot outside and I drive year round with the windows open so I would know.

Let's get to the bottom of this!!

There are some BMW PUMA cases around this (Google PUMA 62105224, thanks to customer Paul S for the info) and AC Schnitzer are aware of some cases too. You can try increasing wheel bolt torque to 180Nm (it's ok to do this). Some cars also need two part wheel bolts part number 36136795153 (there is no locking bolt with these), and some need some friction shims either side of the discs;

Great thanks Lorcan, I'll take a look at the torque on the bolts first, then look into shims if still no joy.

Ended up having to be out of country for last two weeks for work, so back to car now to continue the investigation!

Sorry to hear others also suffering the same, hope we can all find some cause & solutions.

cheers

Rob

doh, thanks for the reverse speed heads up ha ha! I'll look to strip down and clean if the torque settings suggested by Lorcan don't do the trick.

cheers

Did you manage to sort it out? Mine comes and goes and I haven't found time to take the wheels off to investigate.
