It's the injector noise, direct injection makes that ticking noise as the fuel is injected at high pressure directly into the cylinders rather than in port injection which is at lower pressure.

The ticking noise also sounds quite similar to engine pinging, I'm not a fan.

Hah! Two cars ago the manual explicitly said that that sound was normal 'when accelerating heavily while travelling uphill in a high gear' - IE: "We tuned it such that you might get semi-consistent detonation if you really get on it in the midrange. Good luck!"

Today I drove another 2017 340i MPPSK for one day. This car doesn't have the engine tapping noise, at least I can't hear it in the car. BMW changed fuel injector?

The more I hear this while driving, is the more I'm convinced its actually Engine Ping.

Constant coolant warnings starting popping up for me. Also my front rotors have some serious grooves in them. 14k miles. In BMW for service currently, will follow up.

My guess? With modern engine management and sensors, they can run it right on the 'ragged edge' of detonation without undue effect. Perhaps even when you get perfect fuel atomization and a perfect flame front, it sounds just like detonation, but happening at the right time, instead of too early and causing damage? While I know it's too early to tell if the B58 will last like other engines.. but there are plenty of other high performance BMW engines that don't detonate their way off a cliff, so I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.. especially while it's under warranty.

They didnt replace the rotors, in stead "filled them in" and "cleaned up pad residue". I dont notice the brakes performing any worse, just some noticeable grooves in the rotors.

So after getting check engine lights for daysss. The dealer replaced the manifold pressure sensor and low and bed the check engine light came back.
P10f3 is the code I'm getting. What happens is I'll by driving and the car will stutter as if it's running out of gas and then comes back to life. This is infuriating as they have had the car 4 times now for this issue. |
