I just changed my oil to liqui moly 5w40. I don't recommend anyone running 0w20 unless you drive like a grandpa lol. The best oil to probably use is the Shell Rotella T6 5w40 since diesel oil has a larger amount of zinc for better protection. We did find a small glaze of metal in the left over oil sitting on the oil filter housing cap, but it just appeared to be normal wear from the engine and nothing on or inside the oil filter itself. Next oil change I'm going to send the oil out for a analysis.

Thank you for your answers!
The MG FLASHER app is one of the best Apss I've seen so far. The support is simply unique. I do not know if the other manufacturers can be just like these people .... but it can not be any better. if you have discovered a mistake or a wish, which is said to support, it will be perceived and implemented immediately! Best Team! |

The real question is "how bad was your scoring, and how does it compare to other similar engines"? I guarantee anyone that hasn't had issues does not get the cylinders scoped, and pictures taken so they just don't know. |

Well I suppose that if the valve cover was replaced, then I they would have seen other damage underneath without needing to borescope. Must have been clean enough.

I had this same issue. Dealer found 47 misfire counts in cylinder 3 due to a faulty spark plug. Got the car back and it idles like it should.

Safe to say later years N55 might be more reliable vs. B58?
Or vice versa? |

just a bit thrown off by the few examples of B58 misfires causing cylinder wall damage and a toast engine. Coming from a n20 with the timing chain issues, I just need a reliable engine if I make a jump! |

M140 production date 11/16.
- At 8k miles ignition coil broke on 6th cylinder... bmw replaced it (and all sparkplugs) under warrenty. - 600 miles later same thing... bmw then also replaced fuel injector and some gasket to the crank case ventilation. Warrenty. - 20k miles... same thing again... dealer and technicans from germany does every test posibble... leakdown, compression, checking for oil in crankcase ventilation... cant find anything wrong except the pressure of the crankcase ventilation... So they gave up and replaced the whole engine on goodwill. The car ran a Jb+ set at 3 a’clock.... |

Most fun I've ever had with clothes on
'17 240 17k miles....this may be a dealer issue....but noticed for first time coolant a bit low a month after a 5k 12 month service...low coolant warning...checked large reservoir stone cold engine...below min mark but coolant visible.....overflow tank correct level....taking back to dealer for a check.
this minor blip aside.....bmw got this motor exactly right....smooth as silk. |

So: First-gen B58? Probably pretty reliable for a BMW engine. Post-Z4 B58 revisions: Probably very reliable. But until those changes make it out to every car that has a B58, don't think it has Toyota reliability. |
