I've been following this thread for awhile and I just received a recall notice in the mail regarding Constant-Velocity Joint / Transfer Case says Recall Campaign No. 2020-127: (27 80 20RC).

Says when the remedy is available, the constant-velocity joint will be replaced. The transfer case will be inspected and replaced if necessary..

Basically a stay tuned for more info..

This is what I found

On certain 328d xDrive models, engine vibrations could damage the rear driveshaft joint. Over time, this could cause the driveshaft to separate, which would result in a loss of power to the rear wheels. If the driveshaft separates, the vehicle could also move when the transmission is in Park and the parking brake is not used. A loss of power to the rear wheels could increase the risk of a crash. A parked vehicle that rolls away could also increase the risk of an injury, or a crash.

Caused by vibration - go figure, well deduced here Curious to see what the long term fix will be!

Hey Enabled does this new recall mean this correlates directly to our issues?

Yes, the recall will inspect and replace the output flange (oddly called a CV Joint.. there's nothing constant velocity about it), plus changing to a rubber giubo. If the output flange spun, then they will replace the transfer case and do the rubber giubo.

We can hope this goes on www.bmw-rp.com for those that paid for one out of their own pocket.

Forgive my ignorance but would my privately purchased 2013 xDrive be elligible for the recall?

If your BMW's VIN falls in the range of the recall then yes.

I bought my car used and it is getting it done as I type.

You can check here if it applies to your car with your VIN:

This seems to be USA only, and only for the N47 328xd. Unsure if Canadian models would even fall under this recall.

A 330xd would not have transfer case issues, the same like a US 535d with N57 doesn't really have these issues (vibration effect theory).

Stop the press! Really?

I read the entire thread and didn't pick that point out, mind you it was in the wee small hours.

That is quite re-assuring as I was beginning to assume that some of the hesitations I experience were TC related when in fact they could just be the ZF box that needs servicing (kit and oil now ordered).

435d drive 2013 with 40500 miles.
Had the EGR replaced under recall.

How could I check if it is susceptible?

The 6 cylinder cars, petrol or diesel were not affected. For that matter neither were the V8 petrol cars (550i, etc).
You can verify by inspecting the output flange from the transfer case.

Does anybody know how "giubo" is pronounced? I have a new one, a new transfer case, a new EGR cooling pump and new NOX sensors this week but I'll be darned if I know how to pronounce the item also known as flex plate and CV joint!

P.S. The 2015 325d is running like new. Probably because most of it is now - new!

Giubo comes from the two words giunto (Italian word for joint), and Boschi (Italian inventor's last name)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giubo

Wikipedia says JOO-boh for pronunciation

Hah! I was close - I thought giubo might be something like giu in "Giuseppe" and that's pretty close. Thanks for the research!

Amazingly, the only thing I had to pay for was the replacement of the battery, which I only did out of self interest to not be stranded (I live in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado).

As I purchased the vehicle as a used, 2015 model with over 50k miles on it, I thought for certain that I would be paying a huge price. But the recall took care of the giubo and the transfer case, another recall took care of the EGR cooling valve assembly (mine was leaking, fortunately no fire) and BMW extended the warranty on the NOX sensors so they were also covered. I left the dealership owing only the amount for the battery and installation which was super as they had it already to go.

Unfortunately, first day back after that repair, I have thrown another CEL and now see a P0670 code (which since it is only a partial diagnostic) making me think that I may have another trip to the dealership in my future if I can't figure out how to fix it myself!

The BMW service advisor told me that the work represented close to $10,000 worth of repairs, if that helps.

Check the wire running right by the Left side engine cover tab by the back of the engine. Is it damaged? It runs to the glow plug control module.

Sometimes the wire gets crushed by the engine cover and it can be stripped of the insulation.

Well everyone, wish me luck. My car goes in for inspection this Monday (July 13). They will conduct the necessary inspection to see which parts are recalled and which aren't. This is supposedly the start to see if I can claim a reimbursement for the transfer case work done in October. My SA always seems unsure of a positive outcome when i ask about questions regarding money. But she did say BMW is pretty good about reimbursement. Lol yeaaaa, sure 😏

Good luck! I was worried about the recalls and whether or not my parts would be covered or not. But I was really pleased with the SA's forthrightness and being up front. To get all these things covered after 5 years+ was really appreciated.

Thanks! My issue is that they cover my reimbursement since I had the transfer case done in Oct 2019.

My only previous experience was with a "dad-wagon", a Ford Aerostar that had the transfer case go out on it. I paid for the new transfer case and nearly a year later, when I was at the dealership, the service manager (a friend) said, "hey, they recalled your transfer case". I said, big deal, I already had to pay to get it done. "No, they will write you a check!" And they did. I used it as a down payment on the next car!
